Pioneer Women Rally for "Senior Day" Win over Warriors

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team wrapped up the 2016-17 regular season on a six-game winning streak after rallying back from an early deficit to defeat Stanislaus 72-65 on Saturday night at Pioneer Gymnasium.

The Pioneers finish their regular season schedule at 19-8 overall with a 16-4 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games. They will enter next week's CCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed and host Chico State on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. in their first round matchup.

Saturday's game was preceded by a brief ceremony to honor the three 2016-17 seniors, Remy Puou, Shomari Harris, and Shonatalene Trudeau. The team came out a bit sluggish in the first quarter following the emotional ceremony, and they couldn't manage to get a bucket in the opening minutes as Stanislaus jumped out to a 11-1 lead.

The Pioneers chipped away at the lead a little in the second quarter, but it wasn't until after halftime that they flipped the momentum. It was a tale of two halves offensively, as East Bay shot 25 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, then 52 percent over the final 20 minutes. They out-scored the Otters by 10 points in the third quarter and took the lead for the first time in the game just before the end of the period.

Bri Guillory hit a jumper to put East Bay up three early in the fourth, and the home team never looked back. They spent a great deal of time at the free throw line in the final period as they stretched their lead to double figures, and they ended up shooting twice as many foul shots in the game as the Warriors.

CSUEB's seniors came through when it counted down the stretch. Puou turned in tremendous post play to help key the team's rally, racking up 21 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks while going 6-for-11 from the floor.

Harris filled up the scoresheet with six assists and five rebounds to go along with 19 points, much of which came at the free throw line where she went 11-for-12. Harris finishes the regular season as the CCAA scoring champion at 16.5 ppg.

For the second straight night, Morgan Greene totaled just one field goal, but she nonetheless made her presence felt on the glass all night long. Greene dominated the boards, racking up a career-high 17 rebounds. She now leads all CCAA players averaging 9.8 rpg.

Guillory also reached double figures with 10 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Kinsco Kelemen knocked down some big shots from long range, finishing 3-for-4 on three-pointers to add nine points.

The Pioneers have now won 11 of their last 12 games heading into the postseason. As a program, they're 34-6 in CCAA contests over the last two seasons. Next week, East Bay will attempt to defend its CCAA Tournament championship, starting with a re-match of last night's game against Chico State on Tuesday.
