SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team's five-game win streak was snapped on Friday evening with a 59-47 loss to Cal State San Bernardino at Coussoulis Arena.
It was a big win for the Coyotes (11-6, 8-5 CCAA), who are right in the middle of an extremely tight playoff race in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Pioneers (13-8, 10-4) remain in second place, but they now lead the three teams behind them by just one game.
CSUEB struggled shooting the ball on this night, finishing at 30.8 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from three-point range. Overall, they totaled just 16 field goals and two triples, both season lows. The Pioneers also committed a season-high 25 turnovers.
After a tight first quarter, East Bay managed just seven points in the second period and totaled 17 in the opening half as the Coyotes opened up a 13-point lead at halftime. CSUSB led 46-29 after three, before the Pioneers finally mounted a comeback.
East Bay cut its deficit to nine midway through the period, but they ultimately weren't able to get any closer against a San Bernardino team that shot 46.9 percent from the floor.
Shomari Harris played all 40 minutes and led the Pioneers with 15 points, but her evening was a microcosm of the team's, as she committed seven turnovers and went 0-for-7 from long distance.
Remy Puou also reached double figures, tallying 13 points and six rebounds.
Morgan Greene added eight points and matched a season high with 15 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
Freshman
Kayley Hsiung was the only Pioneer to connect from long distance, finishing 2-for-4 from three-point range for six points.
CSUEB now heads down to La Jolla for a huge showdown between the top two teams in the CCAA standings. The Pioneers visit UC San Diego, which is riding a 13-game win streak and defeated East Bay by 12 points on Jan. 7 in Hayward.
