East Bay Men Rally for Second Straight Tournament Title

Final Results (PDF)

LIVERMORE, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team captured its second tournament championship in the span of four days with a first place finish at this week's East/West Bay Area Invitational, co-hosted by Academy of Art and Holy Names on the par-72 course at Wente Vineyards.

The Pioneers turned in a team score of 292 (+4) on Tuesday, by the far the lowest of any school in the 12-team field. After entering the final round in third place, they leap-frogged Holy Names and BYU Hawaii to notch an eight-stroke victory with a total of 884 (+20).

Holy Names, which is coached by CSUEB alumnus and former Pioneer star Chris Herzog, captured second place at 892 (+28).

For the second straight tournament, the Pioneers also boasted the individual medalist. Senior Adam Stone carded his lowest round of the season with a 66 (-6) to post a 54-hole total of 209 (-7) and run away with the individual title by four strokes.

Stone, who entered the week as the No. 31 ranked golfer in the nation according to Golfstat, played incredible golf over his last two rounds. His Tuesday card was pristine, totaling six birdies without a single bogey. For the week, the Garstang, England native did not record a bogey over his final 46 holes, and he led the field with 42 total pars.

Owen Hutchison, the medalist on Saturday in Vallejo, finished third at this tournament after leading the field with 13 birdies. He shot 74 (+2) on Tuesday and finished even par for the week (216), largely on the strength of a 67 in the second round Monday.

Chad Hall bounced back nicely after a rocky first round, carding his second straight 74 (+2) in the final round to finish in 17th place in the overall field of 60 golfers at 227 (+11).

Freshman Chris Carney turned in the fourth score to East Bay's team total with a 78 (+6). He finished strong, posting pars across the entire back nine as the Pioneers, over the last few holes, stretched what was a small lead into a fairly comfortable victory. Carney's total score of 237 (+21) gave him a share of 35th place.

Jonathan Mulvany finished one stroke ahead of Carney for the tournament at 236 (+20), but was one stroke behind him on Tuesday with a 79 (+7). The sophomore was tied for 33rd place individually.

Competing as an individual, Max Murai completed a consistent performance with his third straight 79 (+7) to finish tied with his rookie teammate at 237 (+21) for the week in 35th place.

The Pioneers now have nearly a month off before competing again. They'll travel south for the UC San Diego SoCal Intercollegiate on Mar. 27 and hope to maintain the momentum they've built over the first few weeks of the spring. Based on the team and individual results posted so far in 2016-17, this may be the best Pioneer squad in 40 years, and possibly the history of the program. But they still have big shoes to fill as defending conference champions, and how they finish these last 2-3 months will determine their place in CSUEB's history books.
