SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team traveled to Texas this week to open the 2017 spring schedule at the Lady Rattler Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's University at The Dominion Country Club. The Pioneer women held their own against an extremely talented field that included 10 of the top 40 ranked teams in the nation. East Bay placed ahead of No. 41 Oklahoma Christian and just one stroke behind No. 18 Southwest Oklahoma State. Northeastern State and the host Rattlers shared the tournament crown at +11.
Senior
Julia Youn paced the Pioneers with a strong performance on Monday, carding 76 (+4) on the par-72 course. She finished in 12th place in the overall field of 98 golfers, six strokes behind the individual medalist.
Fellow senior
Kelsi Valenzuela shot her best collegiate round, breaking 80 for the first time as a Pioneer. She fired a 79 (+7) and led the team with three birdies in her round, taking a share of 37th place.
Junior
Sienna Starck tied for 62nd place with a first-round total of 84 (+12). Freshman
Hafsa Khan was right behind her with an 85 (+13), which counted as the fourth score towards CSUEB's team total. Khan finished with a share of 69th place individually.
Junior
Taylor Wyss stumbled a bit with an 88 (+16), which put her in a tie for 81st place. However, Wyss turned in the highlight of Monday's action for the Pioneers with an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole.
