POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 52-38 loss at Cal Poly Pomona to close out the team's current Southern California road trip and the 2017 calendar year.
For the second straight night, the Pioneers struggled shooting from the floor, finishing at just 24.5 percent (12-49). Their record drops to 8-6 with the loss with an even 4-4 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
The evening got off to a good start as the Pioneers made four of their first six field goals attempts and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. They still led 14-11 after the first quarter, but that was when the offensive woes began. East Bay made just two shots the entire second quarter and went into the break after an extremely low-scoring half trailing 21-19.Â
The Broncos extended their lead in the third and then locked the Pioneers down in the final period, holding the visitors to just six points in the final 10 minutes. CSUEB second half point total match its first half (19), as the Pioneers had little success from long distance (6-for-23) or at the free throw line (8-for-13).Â
Pomona did not have a particularly efficient shooting night either, finishing at 35.4 percent from the field (17-for-78), but it was enough to hold off East Bay, which had 20 turnovers and was whistled for 19 fouls.
Janae Chamois led the squad with nine points in a team-high 34 minutes, going 2-for-7 from three-point range.
Morgan Greene added seven points and seven rebounds despite playing limited minutes with foul trouble.Â
Elayshia Woolridge turned in five points, five boards, and three assists, while
Savannah McGill and
Kayla Blair matched her with five points apiece.Â
After stumbling to the program's lowest scoring output in a game since 2012, Cal State East Bay will return home to the friendly confines of Pioneer Gym, where they have a perfect 3-0 record this season, to start the new years on Tuesday, Jan. 2 against Sonoma State.
