Second Half Surge Lifts Sea Lions Past Pioneers

SAN DIEGO, Calif., -- The Pioneer women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2017-18 season with a 78-59 road loss to Point Loma on Tuesday evening, November 14 in Golden Gymnasium.
 
East Bay, whom have yet to play a home game, move to 2-1 on the season after defeating Holy Names and Academy of Art during the West Region Tip-Off Classic in San Francisco over the weekend.
 
The Pioneers jumped out to a 17-13 lead after the first quarter of play and a 31-30 advantage at halftime despite their 35.5 shooting percentage for the the first half. The East Bay lead was helped by seven first half points in eight minutes from junior guard Elayshia Woolrdige.
 
Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) was one of three Pioneers to led East Bay in scoring with 12 points on the evening. Woolridge notched a season-high 12 points while leading the Pioneers with four assists. She added two rebounds and three steals in 21 minutes off the bench.
 
Janae Chamois (Eastvale, Calif.) Chamois finished with season-best 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from three-point land. Chamois grabbed two rebounds and dished out one assist in 24 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore guard Kayley Hsiung (Bakersfield, Calif.) also compiled a season high 12 points as she too connected on four shots from beyond the arc. She chipped in two rebounds, two assists and a steal in 23 minutes off the pine.
 
The Pioneers outscored the Sea Lions 32-2 in bench points, but were out-marked, 36-10 in paint points and 13-9 in points off turnovers. The turning point in the game for the Pioneers came in the second half as they were outscored 48-28 by Point Loma, including 27-11 in the fourth quarter.
 
East Bay shot just 23.1% from the field and 35% from three-point range in the second half, while Point Loma knocked down 46.4% of their shots and 50% of their three-pointers after the intermission.
 
Sophomore forward Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) corralled a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with seven points, two assists and two steals on a team best 34 minutes on the floor.
 
Senior guard Bri Guillory and junior guard Zaria Branch each tallied five points for East Bay. Guillory added three assists and a rebound. Branch added two rebounds in 12 minutes.
 
The Pioneers will open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on the road with games against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. this weekend.
