CARSON, Calif., -- A foul and a made free throw with one second remaining would prove to be the deciding factor in Cal State East Bay women's basketball 80-79 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opening loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday evening, November 17 in the Torodome.
Â
The loss pushes the Pioneers to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 to start the conference season. It is CSUEB's first time losing their CCAA opener since the 2014-15 season.
Â
Two Pioneers notched career high scoring marks in Friday's loss. Junior guard
Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) turned in a complete game compiling a game-high 23 points on 8-for-14 from the field. She added a team best five assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block in 28 minutes off the bench.
Â
Sophomore forward
Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) corralled her third double-double of the season tallying 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Greene shot 11-for-15 from the floor and chipped in two assists and a block.
Â
Senior guard
Janae Chamois (Eastvale, Calif.) was the only other Pioneer to score in double figures for the evening. Chamois scored 12 points and dished out one assist, while going 4-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Her four made three-pointers established a new career high.
Â
The Pioneers shot just 34.8% (8-for-23) from the charity stripe, a tough pill to swallow in a one-point game. Although the team came up with several big shots down the stretch, if it had made even half its free throws, that might have been enough to flip the result into a victory.
Â
CSUEB was down 36-35 at halftime but was outscored in the third quarter 27-16 before fueling an epic comeback to tie the game several times late in the fourth quarter. They finished 5-for-16 from three-point land and continued to find great production off the bench, outscoring Dominguez Hills 39-13.
Â
The Pioneers were narrowly edged out in the points inside the painted area, 38-34 but came away with the advantage on the battle of the boards, 42-37.
Â
East Bay had no trouble knocking down shots on Friday, shooting 49.3% from the floor for the game including 53% accuracy from the field in the second half of action.
Â
Reigning CCAA Women's Basketball Player of Week,
Savannah McGill (Lacey, Wash.) continued her rebounding dominance with a game high 12 rebounds. She added six points, four assists and a steal in 31 minutes on the court.
Â
Nautica Marrow led the Toros with 22 points and four assists. Taylor Farris added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The Pioneers will complete their CCAA road trip with a matchup against Cal State L.A. Saturday evening, November 18 in the Eagles Nest. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
