MIAMI, Fla.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team wrapped up its fall season by finishing in a tie for 12th place this week at the annual Miami Intercollegiate, hosted by Nova Southeastern University on the par-70 Red Tiger Course at Doral.

The Pioneers stumbled a bit Monday morning with a first-round score of 303 (+23). They bounced back with strong play in the second (291) and third (294) rounds, but were unable to make a significant move up the leaderboard in a field that included the top five teams in Division II and eight of the top 13 in the most recent national coaches poll.

No. 1 ranked West Florida took the team title at 825 (-15), easily outpacing defending national champion Florida Southern, which took second place at 834 (-6).

Junior Greg Smith was East Bay's most consistent player this week and top finisher in the individual field of 80 golfers. He shot 72-71 on Monday, then followed that up with a 75 (+5) in Tuesday's final round. Smith's total of 218 (+8) put him in a tie for 30th place overall.

After stumbling in the opening round with an 80 (+10), Will Barnett bounced back to card 72 (+2) on Monday afternoon. He then turned in CSUEB's lowest round of the week on Tuesday with a 69 (-1), moving up to 39th place at 221 (+11).

Sophomore Chris Carney displayed the sort of reliable play that made his freshman season so impressive in 2016-17. Carney ended up with a share of 60th place at 226 (+16) after shooting 77-74-75 in a solid showing of consistency.

Declan Illingsworth was solid for the Pioneers on Monday, shooting-back-to-back round of 74 (+4), both of which contributed to the team's total. She stumbled a bit Tuesday morning, carding 80 to finish in 64th place at 228 (+18).

It was the opposite story for sophomore Max Murai. The left-hander had a frustrating first day with round of 80 (+10) and 81 (+11), but he righted the ship Tuesday with a 75 (+5) that counted towards East Bay's team score. Murai finished tied for 75th at 236 (+26) overall.

The Pioneers have completed their fall schedule with team results that fall a bit below expectations. However, the team is made up largely of newcomers and has shown flashes of tremendous talent and the potential for strong depth. They have also taken on extremely strong field of opponents in their three events thus far. The spring schedule commences in February, and if the Pioneers can manage to find a little more consistency, they have a chance to once again compete for a championship in the CCAA and the West Region.
