CERES, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay sophomore
Megan Satterfield had a record-setting day to lead the CSUEB women's cross country team at the 2017 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships on Saturday at River Oaks Golf Course.
The Pioneers took ninth place out of 12 teams in the final standings. They scored 226 points, just nine behind Cal State San Bernardino in eighth. Chico State won its 10th consecutive team championship, followed by Cal State San Marcos in second place in their first year of eligibility.Â
Satterfield shattered her own school record in the 6k, crossing the tape in Ceres with a time of 21:47.9. She is the first Pioneer woman ever to break 22 minutes in competition, carving nearly 13 seconds off her previous record, which she set last month in Sacramento.Â
Satterfield finished in 17th place individually, missing a spot on the All-CCAA team by just two seconds. It marks the highest finish by a female CSUEB runner at the championship meet since Imani Heath took 13th in 2014.Â
Senior
Dana Pollard was the team's second finisher, taking 30th place overall. She ran an outstanding race, turning in a personal best time of 22:13.1 that will rank her at No. 2 on the program's all-time list.Â
A trio of freshmen followed Pollard, with
Makenna Duda leading the way in 65th place. Her time of 23:21.0 cracks the top 15 in program history, and it's the fastest time for a Pioneer freshman at CCAA Championships since
Sarah Perrin ran 22:48.1 in 2013 to capture Freshman of the Year honors. Duda was followed by
Claire Fisher in 72nd place and
Rosalva Quevado in 79th.Â
Alondra Castro Ortiz was the team's sixth finisher in 85th place, followed closely by seniors
Kandace Compton and
Katherine Embody, who ran together took 86th and 87th with nearly identical times.Â
Junior
Taryn Stevenson finished 95th and freshman
Andrea Contreras took 100th to round out a solid morning for the Pioneer women.Â
The squad will now look ahead to NCAA West Regionals, taking place in Monmouth, Ore. in two weeks. The Pioneers are coming off a 26th place finish in 2016 at the regional meet and haven't finished higher than 23rd since re-joining Division II.Â
