Pioneer Men Come Up Short Against UC San Diego

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's basketball came up short against visiting UC San Diego on Saturday night January 7, falling 52-47 to the 15th-ranked Tritons at Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
The Pioneers fall to 9-6 overall with a 3-5 mark in conference action.
 
It was a tough, defensive outing from both clubs as both teams were held to under 40 percent shooting accuracy from the floor for the game.
 
It was a tight back and forth game from the tip with the lead changing seven times in the second half and neither team reaching a double digit lead. Both squads went into the intermission tied at 22 apiece, but UC San Diego won the second half 30-25.
 
The teams would have a tie score seven times throughout the game as well.
 
Senior guard Jalen Richard paced the Pioneers with 18 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point land. He added four rebounds on a game high 36 minutes of action.
 
Richard has scored in double figures in nine of the Pioneers last ten contests.
 
Senior Pierre Carter erupted for 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting off the bench, knocking down 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc. He finished with three rebounds, one assist and a block on 27 minutes of action.
 
Carter has three straight games with 10 or more points.
 
Senior forward Micah Dunhour tallied 10 points, five rebounds, four assists in 31 minutes on the floor. Dunhour has scored in double digits in 12 of East Bay's 15 game.
 
Sophomore guard Juwan Anderson led the Pioneers with five assists. He put in two points and grabbed three rebounds on 30 minutes of game play.
 
Anderson has led the Pioneers in assists in 13 of the East Bay's 15 games.
 
Junior Drew Bender led the Pioneers with a career high eight rebounds. He compiled one point, three assists and a steal in his second start of the season.
 
The Tritons controlled the paint outrebounding the Pioneers 40-29 and out scoring them in the paint 26-16 but East Bay bench outscored UC San Diego bench 16-10.
 
The Pioneers attempted only nine foul shots while sinking three, both season lows.
 
With the win UC San Diego remained undefeated in CCAA action at 8-0 and 13-2 overall.
 
Adam Kile led the Tritons with a double double scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs. George Buaku added nine points and seven rebounds for UC San Diego.
 
The Pioneers will return to action on with mid-week non-conference matchup with UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday, January 11 in Pioneer Gymnasium. Tip off for the game is at 7:30 p.m.
