Pioneer Men Cruise Past UC Santa Cruz

HAYWARD, Calif. – Every Pioneer that played scored, with five players reaching double digits, in Cal State East Bay's decisive 94-62 victory over UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday night, January 11 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
It was the final non-conference game of the season for CSUEB as they improved to 10-6 overall with their first home win of 2017. The win also snapped a four game losing streak for East Bay.
 
The Pioneers were in control of the game from the tip as they never trailed and claimed a lead of 33 points late in the second half.
 
Senior forward Micah Dunhour paced the Pioneers with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 6-for-7 shooting from the charity stripe. He added four rebounds, three steals, two steals and a block in 21 minutes.
 
Dunhour has scored in double figures in 14 of East Bay's 16 contests.
 
Freshman wing Druce Asah finished with 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting accuracy, including 3-for-3 from three-point land. He had three rebounds, two steals and an assist on 21 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore point guard Juwan Anderson compiled 12 points on an impressive 5-for-5 shooting night and knocking down both of his three-point attempts. Anderson dished out a game high seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and a block in 27 minutes of game play.
 
Senior guard Jalen Richard tallied 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting, sinking 4-for-6 from three-point range and collecting four steals, both game highs. Richard finished with four rebounds and two assists on a team best 31 minutes on the floor.
 
Senior Pierre Carter led the Pioneer bench with 10 points, two assists, a rebound and one steal on 24 minutes of action. He went a perfect 2-for-2 from the foul line.
 
Carter has now scored in double figures in four consecutive games.
 
Junior center Kyle Frakes scored eight points and snatched a game high eight rebounds. He added two blocks on 4-for-8 shooting in only 18 minutes of game action.
 
Senior guard Paramvir Singh put in seven points on 2-for-3 shooting from beyond the arc. He compiled a rebound and one assist in only nine minutes on the court.
 
Junior forward Jelani Mitchell chipped in six points of 3-for-4 shooting from the field. He finished with one rebound on 12 minutes of play.
 
Senior point guard Tre Mauldin scored six points on a perfect 2-for-2 shooting night from three-point land. Mauldin added two assists and a steal in seven minutes of court action.
 
Freshman forward Ja-Mont Wilson tallied a season high three points with four rebounds, an assists and one block. Wilson also throw down a monster dunk to cap off the Pioneer victory.
 
Junior guard Drew Bender finished with two points, an assist, a steal and one rebound on 21 minutes on the floor.
 
The Pioneers dominated the paint outscoring the Banana Slugs 38-34 in paint points and out rebounding UC Santa Cruz 32-28.
 
East Bay also scored 27 points off 19 forced turnovers and out scored UC Santa Cruz 34-9 in bench points. CSUEB also finished with 11 fast break points while allowing none from their opponents.
 
The Pioneers shot 60.3 percent from the field, their second best shooting game of the season. Their 56.5 percent shooting clip from beyond the arc was the best of the season.
 
East Bay held UC Santa Cruz to 39.3 percent shooting for the game and 23.8 percent from three-point land.
 
Fourth year head coach Gus Argenal was proud of his team's effort on the defensive end and their solid job rebounding the ball. 
 
"Anytime you play at home, you want to come out and play your best basketball," Argenal said. "We played much better and improved our defense. I thought we rebounded well and took care of the ball. We needed a win, we needed to get the feeling again leading to our game against Monterey this weekend and going forward into CCAA play."
 
Kyle Creighton led the Banana Slugs with a game high 15 points and eight rebounds. Tre Weston added 10 points and seven rebounds for UC Santa Cruz.
 
The Pioneers will close out their four game home tilt when they Battle for the Bay against rival Monterey Bay on Saturday, January 14 in Pioneer Gymnasium. Tip off will be at 7:30 p.m.
 
The game will be a Blackout so everyone come support your Pioneers wearing your black East Bay swag.
