HAYWARD, Calif. – Senior guard
Jalen Richard scored a game high 22 points in Cal State East Bay's 75-66 comeback victory over CCAA rival Cal State Monterey Bay in Saturday night's "Black Out" game in Pioneer Gymnasium.
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 11-6 on the season and 4-5 in CCAA action. East Bay also completed the season sweep over the Monterey Bay after defeating the Otters 95-74 to open up CCAA play on December 2.
In a game with over 40 fouls called, the Pioneers fought back from a 27-36 halftime deficit, even going down by as many as 11 early in the second half. East Bay outscored Monterey Bay 48-30 in the second half on 46.1 percent shooting from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point land.
East Bay fell behind early after committing six of their eight turnovers in the first half.
Richard finished the game shooting 6-for-12 from the floor connecting on a game best 5-for-7 from three-point range. He added three rebounds and two assists on 32 minutes on the floor.
Richard went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe as well.
Senior forward
Micah Dunhour racked up his fifth double double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds on the evening. Dunhour recorded a game high three blocks, with an assist and a steal on 37 minutes of game action.
Sophomore point guard
Juwan Anderson compiled 11 points, a game best four assists, five rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes on the court.
Anderson went 5-for-6 from the foul line.
Freshman wing
Druce Asah added eight points and a steal on 3-for-6 shooting accuracy for the game. Asah knocked down both of his foul shots.
Junior guard
Drew Bender tallied 10 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal off the bench. Bender shot 2-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Seniors
Pierre Carter and
Lamine Mbodj put in four points apiece. Carter added two rebounds, one assist and a block for the Pioneers.
Mbodj recorded five rebounds and one assist in 14 minutes of game time for East Bay.
Monterey Bay outscored East Bay 40-22 in paint points and 26-18 in bench points, while the Pioneers won the points off turnover battle 15-4 and outscored the Otters 12-10 in second chance points. East Bay also dominated Monterey Bay on the boards outrebounding the Otters 36-32.
Fourth year head coach
Gus Argenal was proud of his team's ability to get stops down the stretch to help his team come away with the victory.
"Just like any team, we play well when we make stops," Argenal said. "We make runs, we get open shots, and Monterey Bay is a very explosive team, they always are. So for us, it was important for us to to defend and rebound at a high level and to get multiple effort on plays. This was a good win leading into our road trip this upcoming weekend."
With the loss, Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 3-12 on the season and 1-8 in CCAA play. Jahvon Johnson led Monterey Bay with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kevin Warren added 18 points and four rebounds for the Otters.
The Pioneers will travel south for match ups against Cal State L.A. on January 20 in the Eagles Nest and Cal State Dominguez Hills on January 21 in the Torodome. Both games are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
