Pioneer Suffer Heartbreaking Double OT Loss to San Marcos

HAYWARD, Calif. – Five Pioneers scored in double figures in Cal State East Bay's heartbreaking 108-109 double overtime loss to Cal State San Marcos in front of a great crowd on "Pack The Wagon" Night Thursday in Pioneer Gymnasium.

Both teams traded buckets and free throws in back-and-forth action all night, in what will likely end up as one of the best games of the year in the CCAA. The Cougars never led by more than five and the Pioneers largest lead of 14 came with 0:22 seconds to play in the first half.

Cal State San Marcos guard Tyson Kygar knocked down the go ahead three-pointer with :03 seconds left in double overtime and drew a foul to put the Cougars up 109-105.

The loss drops CSUEB to 9-5 overall and 3-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Pioneers have lost three straight games for the first time this season.

Senior forward Micah Dunhour, who was celebrating his birthday, led East Bay with a season-best 31 points and 13 rebounds on 11-for-22 shooting and 7-for-8 from the foul line. Dunhour scored 27 of his 31 points after halftime, including 14 points in the overtimes. He also led the Pioneers with 44 minutes of game action.

It was Dunhour's late game baskets that kept the Pioneers within striking distance down the stretch of the game.

Senior guard Jalen Richard continued his recent offensive outbreak erupting for 26 points on 8-for-16 shooting accuracy for the game and 4-for-9 from three-point land. Richard added seven rebounds and four assists in 42 minutes.

Richard went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Freshman wing Druce Asah finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. He shot 5-for-10 from the field and went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Asah added one assist and a steal on 38 minutes of gameplay.

Asah sunk four of his five foul shots.

Sophomore point guard Juwan Anderson tallied 13 points and a team high eight assists. Anderson finished with a rebound and one steal on 38 minutes on the floor. Anderson remained perfect from the free throw line this season sinking all six of his free throws.

Both Pierre Carter and Drew Bender played great reserve minutes for the Pioneer bench. Carter notched 10 points for the second consecutive game on 4-for-8 shooting accuracy. He also knocked down two three-point shots in back-to-back games. Carter added two rebounds in 39 minutes.

Bender compiled nine points, two assists and a steal on 3-for-5 shooting from three-point land.

Junior Kyle Frakes completed the game with three points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

The Pioneers broke out of their shooting slump hitting 52.2 percent of their shots for the game. East Bay shot 50 percent from down town, including going 8-for-12 from three-point range in the first half.

CSUEB also controlled the battle of the boards outrebounding San Marcos 44-36 for the game and outscoring the Cougars in second chance points 10-9.
