HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team completed their weekend home tilt with a 60-67 loss to the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos Saturday night, January 28 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
With the loss, East Bay fell to 12-9 overall and 5-8 in CCAA action.
The contest was a nearly unwatchable marathon as there were 59 fouls called between both teams. Five players fouled out in regulation, including four Pioneer players as both squads shot a combined 69 foul shots. The Broncos found themselves in the double bonus before the second media timeout.
The Pioneers were once again outscored in the second half of play 44-32 after leading 28-23 at halftime. Both squads made 21 free throws on the evening and they each claimed an 11 point lead at some point during the contest.
The game was close down the final minutes of game play. The Broncos closed the contest on a 26-17 run to help pull away for the seven-point victory.
Senior guard
Jalen Richard paced the Pioneers with a game high 20 point on the way to knocking down five three-pointers for the third time this season. He added eight rebounds and a block while going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe on a game best 35 minutes of action.
Sophomore point guard
Juwan Anderson tallied 13 points as he routinely hit timely baskets for the Pioneers down the stretch to keep them in the game. He finished with two assists, one rebound and a steal in 20 minutes on the floor.
Senior guard
Paramvir Singh was a key factor in the East Bay attack. Singh dominated defensively with his on ball pressure, timely blocks and gut checking charges he took in route to eight points, eight rebounds, an assist and one steal. He saw a season best 32 minutes of game action.
He shot 2-for-3 from the field and 4-for-8 from the foul line.
Pierre Carter,
Druce Asah and
Tre Mauldin all put in six points apiece. Carter, a senior, also grabbed a game high 10 boards while dishing out two assists in 32 minutes out the bench. Asah corralled three rebounds all on the offensive end and sunk one three-pointer in 25 minutes on the court. Mauldin chipped in an assist, one rebound and a steal while going 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
The Pioneers shot 29.4 percent from the field, 32.0 percent in the first half and 26.9 percent in the second half, their second lowest total of the season.
East Bay out rebounded Cal Poly Pomona 42-37 and outscored the Broncos 17-8 in second chance points.
Cal Poly Pomona dominated in all the other facets of the game, out scoring East Bay 40-10 in paint point and 47-25 in bench points. The Broncos also scored 20 points on 18 forced turnovers where as the Pioneers were held to 11 points while forcing 12 turnovers.
Jeremy Dennis led the Broncos with 15 points and seven rebounds. Chris Sullivan added 13 points and three rebounds for Cal Poly Pomona. With the victory, Cal Poly Pomona improved to 7-10 on the season with a 5-8 mark in CCAA play.
The Pioneers will head on the road as they travel south for matchups against Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, February 3 in Coussoulis Arena and a meeting with UC San Diego on Saturday, February 4 in Rimac Arena. Both games are set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
