HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team opened their weekend home stand with a 79-82 setback loss to the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks on Friday night, January 27 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
With the loss East Bay dropped to 5-7 in CCAA play and 12-8 overall. Humboldt State improved to 9-10 overall and 4-8 in CCAA action.
In a contest with 45 fouls called, both teams were in the double bonus with over 10 minutes to play in the second half. The Pioneers were outscored 47-36 in the second half after leading 43-35 at the intermission. The Lumberjacks out shot the Pioneers 27-16 from the foul line knocking down 28 to East Bay's 10.
The game went back and fourth down to the final minutes of play as the game was tied at 72 apiece at the 3:38 media break. The Lumberjacks were able to convert more foul shots than the Pioneers down the stretch as they pulled away for a three point victory.
Four Pioneer players scored in double figures with three players racking up 18 points each.
Senior guard
Jalen Richard tallied 18 points, six points and an assist on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor in 35 minutes of action. Richard connected on a game high four shot from beyond the three-point arc.
Richard has scored in double figures in 16 of the 20 Pioneer games including seven straight.
Senior forward
Micah Dunhour also finished with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists on 6-for-10 shooting from the field in 35 minutes on the court. Dunhour went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Dunhour has 18 games of double digit scoring including seven straight outings.
Freshman wing
Druce Asah dropped 18 points, three rebounds and a block on 6-for-11 shooting accuracy from the field while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Asah saw 24 minutes of action on the floor.
Junior center
Kyle Frakes had a well rounded night with 12 points, a team high eight rebounds with five on the offensive end, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Frakes went 6-for-8 from the field in 27 minutes.
Junior guard
Drew Bender recorded six points, five rebounds and three assists on 3-for-6 shooting from the floor. Bender saw 21 minutes on the court.
Sophomore point guard
Juwan Anderson five points, a team high four assists, one rebound and a steal in 27 minutes.
The teams swapped shooting percentages as the Pioneers shot 52.9 percent from the field in the first half and 44.8 in the second half while the Lumberjacks went 39.3 percent from the field in the first half and 57.1 percent in the second half.
The Pioneers won the battle of the paint as they out rebounded the Lumberjacks 34-31 and outscored them in paint points 44-34. East Bay also had 23 second chance points to 12 second chance points from Humboldt State.
HSU received 16 points from their bench to just seven from the CSUEB. The turnover battle was close as the Lumberjacks scored 18 points off 11 forced turnovers while the Pioneers forced 10 turnovers that led to 16 points.
Tyras Rattler, Jr. led the Lumberjacks with a game high 27 points. Calvin Young II added 14 points and a game high 15 rebounds for Humboldt State.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back Saturday night, January 28 when they square off against the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in Pioneer Gymnasium. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m.
