Pioneer Women Topple Toros 78-68 to Sweep SoCal Trip

CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team completed a perfect 2-0 road trip by hanging on for a 78-68 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday evening at the Torodome.

In a re-match of last season's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship game, the Pioneers once again came out on top. They improve to 11-7 for the season and move into a tie for second place in the CCAA standings with an 8-3 conference record.

The win was highlighted by several remarkable individual performances. Shomari Harris scored a career-high 30 points -- 23 of which came in the second half -- as she carried the Pioneers down the stretch and prevented repeated comeback attempts by the Toros. She also tallied six rebounds and six assists, while going 3-for-7 from long distance and knocking down 11-of-14 from the foul line.

Not to be out-done, the frontcourt tandem of Remy Puou and Morgan Greene was dominant down low. Both players notched double-doubles, as Puou posted 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Greene racked up 15 points and 11 boards. The pair combined to go 10-for-20 from the field and 11-for-13 at the line.

The Pioneers were red hot to open the game and jumped out to a 13-2 lead. But the home team rallied back at the end of the first quarter, and carried that momentum into the second. The teams were tight heading into halftime with East Bay holding a 32-29 lead.

CSUEB extended its advantage with strong defense in the third quarter and led by as many as 13 points with less than two minutes to play.

Dominguez Hills wouldn't go away, however, and they finally started knocking down three-pointers in the fourth. The final quarter of play was incredibly high scoring, as the teams seemed to trade buckets back and forth each time down the court. East Bay ended up out-scoring the Toros 28-26 in the frame to hang on for the 10-point win, as Harris made enough free throws in the last minute to prevent a final rally.

Statistically, the game was nearly dead even. The Pioneers shot 39.7 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from three, totaled 43 rebounds, and committed 15 turnovers. The Toros shot 40.6 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from deep with 41 rebounds and 16 turnovers. The biggest difference came at the free throw line -- Dominguez was whistled for twice as many fouls as the Pioneers and attempted just seven free throws, compared to 30 for East Bay.

Kincso Kelemen and Janae Chamois both buried two shots from long distance, finishing with eight and six points, respectively. Shontalele Trudeau added four points off the bench, and freshman Kayley Hsiung tallied a career-high five assists.

The Pioneers now boast an impressive 7-3 record on the road this season, but they'll have to get the job done at home to keep pace in the playoff race next weekend. East Bay returns to Hayward to host Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona next Friday and Saturday nights.
