HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team routed visiting Humboldt State on Friday evening at Pioneer Gym, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 70-45 win.
The Pioneers improve to 12-7 overall and move into second place by themselves in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with a conference record of 9-3.
East Bay dominated the Jacks (6-13, 5-7 CCAA) in the second and fourth quarters, holding them under 10 points in both frames. For the game, the Pioneers shot an impressive 51.8 percent from the field, while limiting Humboldt to just 32 percent.
Fresh off racking up 59 points last weekend and capturing the CCAA Player of the Week award, senior
Shomari Harris was limited to 10 points on this night. But the Pioneers were effective in spreading their scoring around, with four players in double figures and six players with at least eight points.
The game was tight in the early going, and East Bay managed to hold a three-point lead after the first quarter thanks
Bri Guillory's driving layup in the final seconds. The Pioneers grabbed the momentum in the second period, extending their lead to double digits as
Kayley Hsiung knocked down a pair of three-pointers. CSUEB shot an even 50 percent in the first half and went into halftime with an 11-point advantage.
The Jacks played the Pioneers evenly in the third, and at one point cut their deficit to just six midway through the quarter. But Harris responded by burying a three the next time down the court, which keyed a 7-0 run. East Bay never looked back from there, out-pacing HSU 22-7 in the fourth to make it a blowout victory.
Guillory was the team's leading scorer, tallying 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 2-for-3 from long distance.
Elayshia Woolridge filled up the box score with 10 points on 5-for-7 from the field, to go along with four rebounds, four assists, and a season-high five steals.
Seniors Harris and
Remy Puou both notched 10 points as well, and both finished 4-for-9 from the floor. Puou paced the squad with seven rebounds and three blocks in 35 minutes. Harris added four assists and four boards.
Shontalene Trudeau finished with eight points and five rebounds in 24 big minutes off the bench. Hsiung also notched eight points, and
Morgan Greene contributed six points despite dealing with foul trouble.
As a program, Cal State East Bay women's basketball has a record of 34-7 over their last 41 CCAA games dating back to 2014-15. Tonight's win improves their home record this season to 4-4, with a chance to surpass the .500 mark on Saturday night.
Tomorrow the Pioneers welcome in Cal Poly Pomona, which sits just one game behind them with an 8-4 conference record, for a 5:30 p.m. showdown.
