HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay will embark on their first road trip of 2017 when they travel to Southern California with CCAA weekend matchups against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Pioneers (11-6, 4-5 CCAA) will take on the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (8-10, 4-6 CCAA) on Friday, January 20 in the Eagles Nest and will square off against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (8-6, 4-4 CCAA) on Saturday, January 21 in the Torodome. Both games are set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
WEEK IN REVIEW
CSUEB went 2-0 on the week with home wins over non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz and CCAA rival Cal State Monterey Bay.
Every Pioneer player scored as East Bay defeated UC Santa Cruz 94-62 on January 11 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Pioneers were in control of the game from the tip as they never trailed and claimed a lead of 33 points late in the second half.
Micah Dunhour paced the Pioneers with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field with four rebounds, three steals, two steals and a block in 21 minutes.
Druce Asah finished with 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting accuracy, including 3-for-3 from three-point land. He had three rebounds, two steals and an assist on 21 minutes of action.
Juwan Anderson compiled 12 points on an impressive 5-for-5 shooting night and knocking down both of his three-point attempts. Anderson dished out a game high seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and a block in 27 minutes of game play.
Jalen Richard tallied 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting, sinking 4-for-6 from three-point range and collecting four steals, both game highs. Richard finished with four rebounds and two assists on a team best 31 minutes on the floor.
Pierre Carter led the Pioneer bench with 10 points, two assists, a rebound and one steal on 24 minutes of action.
Kyle Frakes scored eight points and snatched a game high eight rebounds. He added two blocks on 4-for-8 shooting in only 18 minutes of game action.
The Pioneers dominated the paint outscoring the Banana Slugs 38-34 in paint points and out rebounding UC Santa Cruz 32-28.
East Bay also scored 27 points off 19 forced turnovers and out scored UC Santa Cruz 34-9 in bench points. CSUEB also finished with 11 fast break points while allowing none from their opponents.
The Pioneers shot 60.3 percent from the field, their second best shooting game of the season. Their 56.5 percent shooting clip from beyond the arc was the best of the season.
East Bay held UC Santa Cruz to 39.3 percent shooting for the game and 23.8 percent from three-point land.
The Pioneers bounced back into conference play with a 75-66, victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on January 14. With the win, East Bay also completed the season sweep over the Monterey Bay after defeating the Otters 95-74 to open up CCAA play on December 2.
In a game with over 40 fouls called, the Pioneers fought back from a 27-36 halftime deficit, even going down by as many as 11 early in the second half. East Bay outscored Monterey Bay 48-30 in the second half on 46.1 percent shooting from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point land.
East Bay fell behind early after committing six of their eight turnovers in the first half.
Jalen Richard scored a game high 22 points on 6-for-12 from the floor connecting on a game best 5-for-7 from three-point range. He added three rebounds and two assists on 32 minutes on the floor. Richard went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe as well.
Micah Dunhur racked up his fifth double double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds on the evening. Dunhour recorded a game high three blocks, with an assist and a steal on 37 minutes of game action.
Juwan Anderson compiled 11 points, a game best four assists, five rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes on the court. Anderson went 5-for-6 from the foul line.
Druce Asah added eight points and a steal on 3-for-6 shooting accuracy for the game. Asah knocked down both of his foul shots.
Drew Bender allied 10 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal off the bench. Bender shot 2-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Pierre Carter and
Lamine Mbodj put in four points apiece. Carter added two rebounds, one assist and a block for the Pioneers.
Mbodj recorded five rebounds and one assist in 14 minutes of game time for East Bay.
Monterey Bay outscored East Bay 40-22 in paint points and 26-18 in bench points, while the Pioneers won the points off turnover battle 15-4 and outscored the Otters 12-10 in second chance points. East Bay also dominated Monterey Bay on the boards out rebounding the Otters 36-32.

The Pioneers have two players in the top-7 in scoring with senior forward
Micah Dunhour currently sitting 3rd in the conference with 16.6 points on 46.5 percent shooting accuracy, which ranks 6th. He is also 5th in the conference grabbing 7.2 rebounds per outing. He is 5th in the CCAA with 33.1 minutes per game.
Dunhour leads East Bay with five double doubles on the season and has scored in double figures in 16 out the Pioneers 18 games. He is putting in 17.0 points per contest in conference play.
Senior guard
Jalen Richard is 7th in the CCAA scoring at a 14.8 per game clip. He is 20th in the conference racking up 5.3 boards per contest. He sits 6th in the CCAA playing 32.8 minutes per game. He is also shooting 40.4 percent from three-point land, which is 5th in the conference.
Richard is averaging 17.7 points in conference action and has scored in double figures in 12 of the last 15 East Bay games.
Sophomore point guard
Juwan Anderson leads the CCAA with 5.4 assists and a 3.2 assist to turnover ratio. Anderson has 87 assists and only 27 turnovers so far on the season. He is averaging 5.8 assists in conference play.
Anderson is adding 7.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals, with ranks 10 in the CCAA. He is shooting 96.7 percent from the charity stripe sinking 29 of 30 foul shots.
Freshman wing Druca Asah is putting in a 12.2 points point game on 46.2 percent accuracy from the field, including 44.8 percent shooting from three-point range, 4th in the CCAA. Asah is averaging 2.3 made three-pointers per outing.
Senior
Pierre Carter is leading the Pioneer bench with 8.6 points and 3.1 rebounds on 41.0 percent shooting from the floor in 25.1 minutes of action per game. Carter has scored in double figures in four of the last five games.
Junior
Drew Bender is contributing 6.0 points, 2.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds. Bender has 10 points and five rebounds in the Pioneers win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Bender is shooting an impressive 85.7 percent from the charity stripe for the season.
Junior
Kyle Frakes leads East Bay, shooting 62.1 percent from the field. Frakes is compiling 5.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.
East Bay is 6th in the CCAA in scoring offense averaging 73.6 points per contest. The Pioneers are 7th in scoring defense only allowing 70.2 points from opponents.
The Pioneers are 7th in the CCAA in field goal percentage, shooting 43.9 percent from the floor as a team.
CSUEB is 3rd in the conference with 152 three-pointers made so far this season and sits 5th in three-point field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 33.3 percent.
East Bay is shooting 38.0 percent from beyond the arc, 5th in the CCAA. The Pioneers are averaging 8.9 made three-pointers per game.
The Pioneers are 6th in the conference in free throw percentage connecting on 69.9 percent of their foul shots as a team.

SCOUTING CAL STATE L.A.
The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles will enter this weekend's matchup with an 8-10 record and a 4-6 mark in conference play. They are coming off an 89-82 loss to Chico State and a 66-59 win over Stanislaus State over the past weekend. The Pioneers defeated the Golden Eagles 86-84 in their conference home opener in Pioneer Gymnasium on December 19. Travis Hammonds leads the Golden Eagles with 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds. Jordan Wilson is adding 14.9 points and 3.9 assists for Cal State L.A.
SCOUTING CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros come into the weekend meeting 8-6 overall and 4-4 in CCAA action. The Toros are coming back-to-back losses to Stanislaus State 76-86 and Chico State 70-77 over the weekend. This will be the first and only matchup this season for the Pioneers and Toros. Vincent Golson leads Dominguez Hills with 17.2 points and 4.2 assists per game. Justin Sadler is chipping in 13.0 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Toros.
