Pioneer Men Pumped for Blackout Game Against Monterey Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East will wrap their four game home tilt with their "Blackout Night" matchup with Bay Area conference rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, January 14 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
The Pioneers will enter the matchup with a 10-6 mark on the season and a 3-5 record in CCAA action. East Bay defeated Monterey Bay 95-74 in the Kelp Bed on December 2.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
Cal State East Bay routed UC Santa Cruz 94-62 on Wednesday night in Pioneer Gymnasium. Every Pioneer that played scored as the Pioneers shot 60.3 percent from the field and dominated from the tip.
 
Senior forward Micah Dunhour aced the Pioneers with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 6-for-7 shooting from the charity stripe. He added four rebounds, three steals, two steals and a block in 21 minutes.
 
Freshman wing Druce Asah finished with 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting accuracy, including 3-for-3 from three-point land. He had three rebounds, two steals and an assist on 21 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore guard Juwan Anderson compiled 12 points on an impressive 5-for-5 shooting night and knocking down both of his three-point attempts. Anderson dished out a game high seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and a block in 27 minutes of game play.
 
Senior guard Jalen Richard tallied 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting, sinking 4-for-6 from three-point range and collecting four steals, both game highs. Richard finished with four rebounds and two assists on a team best 31 minutes on the floor.
 
Senior Pierre Carter led the Pioneer bench with 10 points, two assists, a rebound and one steal on 24 minutes of action. He went a perfect 2-for-2 from the foul line.
 
The Pioneers dominated the paint outscoring the Banana Slugs 38-34 in paint points and out rebounding UC Santa Cruz 32-28.
 
East Bay also scored 27 points off 19 forced turnovers and out scored UC Santa Cruz 34-9 in bench points. CSUEB also finished with 11 fast break points while allowing none from their opponents.
 
The Pioneers shot 60.3 percent from the field, their second best shooting game of the season. Their 56.5 percent shooting clip from beyond the arc was the best of the season.
 
East Bay held UC Santa Cruz to 39.3 percent shooting for the game and 23.8 percent from three-point land.
 
PIONEER POINTS
East Bay has two players in the top-10 in scoring with Micah Dunhour leading the CCAA with 16.6 points per game on 47.2 percent shooting accuracy, which ranks 7th in the conference. He is also 9th in the CCAA grabbing 7.0 rebounds per outing. He leads the conference with 32.8 minutes per game.
 
Dunhour has scored in double figures in 14 out the Pioneers 16 games. He is averaging 17.1 points per game in conference play.
 
Senior guard Jalen Richard is 8th in the CCAA scoring at a 14.4 per game clip. He currently sits 4th in the conference playing 32.9 minutes per game and is 18th in rebounding at 5.4 per contest.
 
Richard is tied with Dunhour with 17.1 points per game in CCAA action and has scored in double digits in 10 out of the last 11 games.
 
Sophomore guard Juwan Anderson leads the CCAA with 5.5 assists per game and 3.5 assist to turnover ratio. Anderson has 83 assists and only 24 turnovers on the season so far. Anderson is averaging 6.0 assists in CCAA play.
 
He is adding 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals, which ranks 17 in the conference. Anderson is shooting a perfect 1.000 percent from the foul line sinking all 24 of his free throws this season.
 
Freshman wing Druce Asah is putting in 12.5 points per game, 21st in the CCAA on 46.0 percent shooting from the floor and 45.9 percent accuracy from three-point land, 6th in the conference. Asah is putting in 2.4 made three-pointers per outing.
 
Senior Pierre Carter is leading the Pioneer bench with 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds on 42.2 percent shooting from the floor in 25.1 minutes of game action. Carter has four consecutive double figures scoring outputs for East Bay and seven on the season.
 
Junior Drew Bender in contributing 5.7 points, 2.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds. Bender grabbed a career best eight rebounds against UC San Diego. He is shooting an impressive 83.9 from the charity stripe.
 
Kyle Frakes leads East Bay shooting 63.2 percent from the field. Frakes is compiling 5.7 points and 3.9 rebounds.
East Bay is 6th in the CCAA in scoring offense averaging 73.6 points per contest. The Pioneers are 9th in scoring defense only allowing 70.5 points from opponents.
 
The Pioneers are 7th in the CCAA in field goal percentage, shooting 44.1 percent from the floor as a team.
 
CSUEB is 3rd in the conference with 145 three-pointers made so far this season and sits 5th in three-point field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 33.6 percent. East Bay is shooting 38.2 percent from beyond the arc, 6th in the CCAA. The Pioneers are averaging 9.1 made three-pointers per game.
 
The Pioneers are 7th in the conference in free throw percentage connecting on 69.1 percent of their foul shots as a team.
 
East Bay is also 7th in rebounding defense, grabbing 33 rebounds per game.
 
The Pioneers are 3rd in the CCAA averaging 14.1 assists per game, with 226 total and are 5th in the conference with 6.5 steals per outing, including 104 total. 
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY
The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters come in the matchup with a 3-11 record overall and a 1-7 mark in CCAA play. The Otter are coming off back-to-back losses to UC San Diego 50-54 on January 5 and to Cal State San Marcos 66-77 on January 7. Kevin Warren leads the Otters with 12.7 points and 2.9 rebounds. Shawn Smith is adding 11.4 points and 2.4 assists for Monterey Bay.
