HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team split a pair of matches at Pioneer Gymnasium on Saturday, the second day of the fifth annual Route 92 Showdown. The Pioneers picked up their first win of the season in the afternoon, defeating Holy Names in four sets.
Sophomore
Julie Navarro hit .480 and led all players with 13 kills in the victory as CSUEB out-hit the Hawks, .196 to .059.
East Bay took a 2-1 lead in the tournament finale against unbeaten Dominican, but the Penguins rallied to win game four, then hung on to win a tight, back-and-forth fifth set.
Kiki Leuteneker racked up 19 kills and 19 digs, while fellow sophomore
Deja Thompson tallied 18 kills and 11 scoops.
Brandi Brucato and
Darlene Lee each finished with 31 digs.
