HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team was victorious on Thursday, the first day of the 2016 Division II West Region Showcase at Pioneer Gymnasium. CSUEB defeated Dominican in straight sets to improve their record to 2-3 in non-conference play.
It was the second straight matchup between the Pioneers and Penguins, as the two squads battled last Saturday in the final match of the fifth annual Route 92 Showdown. With this afternoon's win, East Bay avenged its frustrating five-set loss to Dominican last week.
The Pioneers out-hit the Penguins in all three sets, finishing with a .180 attack percentage for the match. They also took advantage of eight service aces, led by
Deja Thompson with a career-high of five.
Thompson posted 10 kills and 13 digs, her fourth double-double in the first five matches of the season. Fellow sophomore
Kiki Leuteneker also reached double figures in kills with 10.
Sophomore middle
Kathy McKiernan and sophomore opposite
Julie Navarro both finished with seven kills, and McKiernan led the team with a .368 hitting percentage.
Thompson also tied for the team lead with 13 digs along with junior libero
Brandi Brucato.
Darlene Lee and
Katie Ireland tallied 12 scoops each, and Ireland racked up 31 assists to lead all players in the match.
CSUEB returns to action Friday as the DII West Region showcase continues. The Pioneers battle PacWest foes Notre Dame de Namur at 1:30 p.m., followed by Holy Names at 8:30 p.m.
