HAYWARD, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team is back in Hayward this weekend to play their first home games of the season against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competition.
The Pioneers take on Sonoma State Friday under the nights at 7 p.m., then return to the field Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. to host San Francisco State, which enters the weekend in first place.

WEEK IN REVIEW
CSUEB will look to bounce back from an 0-2 road trip to open the CCAA schedule, during which they gave up nine total goals in losses at No. 13 Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Last Friday's contest was perhaps the wildest of the season. Despite a penalty kick goal by Christian Gonzalez, the Pioneers fell behind 4-1 to the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles. But goals by Kalvin Conley and Luis Lopez in the final eight minutes brought East Bay within one, and then Gonzalez nearly tied it at the buzzer before CSULA's keeper made a diving save to preserve a 4-3 win.

Despite Sunday's 5-1 final score, the match against the Toros was tight the majority of the way. Victor Calderon scored his first goal of the season, but CSUDH held its 2-1 lead into the final 20 minutes before tacking on a few insurance goals.

PIONEER POINTS
East Bay ranks fifth among the 13 CCAA teams with 11 goals scored in seven games this season. However, their 13 goals allowed is the most in the conference.

Junior Michael Paiva has been the team's top scorer early in the season with three goals and six points. He also paces the squad in shots (13) and shots on goal (5). Paiva ranks among the top 10 goal scorers in the league despite being held scoreless in the opening weekend of CCAA play.

Lopez and Conley each have two goals on the season, while Calderon and Preston Hale are tied for the team lead with two assists apiece.

SCOUTING SONOMA STATE
The Seawolves play low-scoring games, having netted just four goals in six games, but allowed only five. They managed two goals in a huge win over defending champion Cal Poly Pomona in their CCAA opener. Goalkeeper Mitch North ranks top five in the league in saves and goals against average. The Pioneers lost 3-0 at Sonoma State last season.

SCOUTING HUMBOLDT STATE
The only CCAA team to play lower-scoring games than SSU is Humboldt, who have scored just three goals in six games and allowed four. They dropped their first two conference games to Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, each by a score of 1-0. Goalkeepers Robert Quintero and Chris Cherms split time and have allowed two goals each, while making 20 and 19 saves, respectively. Cal State East Bay beat the Jacks 2-1 up in Arcata last year.
