HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team closed out the 2016 Division II West Region Showcase with a three-set victory over Academy of Art on Saturday evening at Pioneer Gymnasium.
With the win, the Pioneers finish their non-conference schedule with a record of 4-4. They avenge a five-set loss last week to the Urban Knights at the Route 92 Showdown.
CSUEB hit over .300 in both the second and third sets, and out-hit Academy of Art .244 to .175 for the match. They also topped the Urban Knights 46 to 35 in total kills.
Sophomore
Deja Thompson led all players with 15 kills and also notched seven digs.
Kiki Leuteneker tallied nine kills with just one errors, and Julia Navarro added eight kills.
Setter
Katie Ireland turned in another impressive performance to close out a great weekend for the sophomore newcomer. She racked up 32 assists and led the team with 17 digs to go along with five kills. Through eight matches, Ireland is second on the team averaging 4.39 digs per set, behind only
Brandi Brucato (5.03 per set), who notched 12 digs on Saturday.
Next up, the Pioneers hit the road for ther first time this season to open the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule. They visit Chico State and Stanislaus State next Friday and Saturday, with both matches set for 7 p.m.
