HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell to visiting San Francisco State by a final score of 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
It was the final makeup contest from the rained out series between the two teams back on Mar. 11-13. With the defeat, the Pioneers (27-17, 18-15 CCAA) split the four-game season series with the Gators (22-22, 14-18 CCAA).
Offense was hard to come by in this midweek matchup, as both teams turned in impressive pitching performances. East Bay came into the game hitting .318 as a team -- second-best in the conference -- but they scattered just five hits against a trio of Gator hurlers.
SF State scored the first run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth. With two out and no one on base, the Gators hit a double, drew a walk, and took advatnage of a passed ball to put a runner on third base. Andrew Breen then beat out a well-placed swinging bunt to allow a run to come home.
The Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the fourth after
Rudy Navarro and
Troy Resch recorded back-to-back singles to open the frame. With runners on the corners,
Dakota Conners grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to bring home the tying run.
East Bay got runners in scoring position again in the fifth, but couldn't get the two-out hit they needed to take the lead. Then, in the top of the last inning, the Gators loaded the bases with one out. Pioneer starter
Andrew Fernandez buckled down to strike out SF State's best hitter, Myles Franklin. But the next batter, Bryce Brooks, shot an opposite field single to bring home the go-ahead run.
Raymond Jones gunned down Dalton Pizzuti at the plate, who tred to score from second, to end the inning, but the damage was done. The Pioneers couldn't muster a rally in the bottom of the inning as the visitors secured the victory.
Fernandez was a tough-luck loser after pitching extremely well. The redshirt sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing eight hits and just one earned run.
Resch and
Michael Frantz each finished with two hits for the Pioneers, who wrap up the regular season this weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay. With a trip to the CCAA tournament on the line, CSUEB hosts the Otters on Friday and Sunday, and they travel to Seaside for a doubleheader Saturday.
