OAKLAND -- Alex Vesia spun a two-hitter over six innings pitching and struck out eight Academy of Art batters in a dominant 7-0 victory Friday at Laney College in the 2016 opener. The Pioneers are 1-0, while the Urban Knights fell to 0-1.
Chris Porter broke a scoreless tie in the third when he launched a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to put the Pioneers on the board first. Porter led the Pioneers in home runs in 2015 with five.
After Porter collected his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to score
Dakota Conners to make it 2-0, the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the sixth.
The Pioneers used four hits to score four runs in the sixth. The highlight of the big inning was when CSUEB had already put across two runs to make it 4-0 and
Raymond Jones stepped to the plate and delivered a triple down the right field line to score Conners and
Myles Babitt to make it 6-0.
CSUEB added one more run in the seventh to cap their scoring when
Troy Resch singled in
Michael Thomas.
The seven runs were much more than Vesia and the relief efforts of
Marcus Williams,
Sean Patton, and
Andrew Fernandez would need as the four pitchers combined for the shutout on just four hits.
"Vesia really set the pace. We executed real well and got some big two out hits," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach
Bob Ralston. "Vesia and Porter worked really well together"
Another important statistic is the Pioneer pitchers didn't allow any walks and struck out 10 batters."Anytime you win the strikeout- to-walk category that's huge," said Ralston.
Resch, Jones, and Porter all had two RBI's to lead the Pioneers. Conners' was the lone Pioneer with two hits and also had two runs. Thomas joined Conners scoring two runs.
Cal State East Bay and the Academy of Art are back at it Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 A.M. at Pioneer Baseball Field.
