TURLOCK, Calif.--
Marcus Wise and
Dakota Conners both collected three hits and two RBI's and Cal State East Bay won 7-5 over Stanislaus State to earn a split in their four-game opening series of conference play in 2016. The Pioneers improves to 2-2 in the CCAA North Division and 11-4 overall. The Warriors are now 2-2 in the north division and 9-5 overall.
After dropping the first two games of the series to the Warriors, the Pioneers stormed back winning game two of Saturday's doubleheader 7-3 before winning on the road Sunday.
CSUEB had 16 hits Sunday, which was their second-best hit total of the season but is 10 less than the program record that was set Friday, Feb. 19 in a 19-7 Pioneer victory over Fresno Pacific.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Wise scored on a double-steal from third and
Michael Thomas advanced to second. The Warriors got the run back in the bottom of the first and the game was tied 1-1.
It remained 1-1 until the fourth inning when the Pioneers plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead. With one out,
Chris Porter doubled and was brought home when Conners singled up the middle to make it 2-1. RBI singles by Wise and Thomas brought the advantage to 4-1.
Conners big day continued in the fifth when he singled to score Porter to build the Pioneer lead to 5-1.
The Warriors got two back in the fifth to make it 5-3. The score would hold until the eighth when the Pioneer offense struck again for a run.
Rudy Navarro scored unearned when
Joey Dice reached first on Warrior fielding error by first baseman Nick Molina.
Stanislaus State would get it back to a two-run deficit at 6-4, but the run-scoring pattern had been established. Every time the Warriors scored, the Pioneers would answer back to prevent the Warriors from getting any closer.
The Pioneers would add more insurance in the ninth when
Daniel Goodrich got to third on a Wise single and touched home on a throwing error by pitcher Micha Hall that also allowed Wise to get all the way to third.
Stanislaus State got a home run by Patrick Mulry in the bottom of the ninth, but closer
Derek Oetken got the three necessary outs and recorded his third save.
Thomas, Navarro, and Porter all had two-hit games. Navarro is batting .472 with 17 RBi's through 15 games in 2016.
Cole Compton got his first win (1-0) of the season after pitching two innings and giving up an earned run and one hit.
Brandon Acosta got the start for CSUEB and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Cal State East Bay next plays Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Pioneer Baseball Field against CCAA North Division rival, Chico State.
