HAYWARD, Calif.-- Cal State East Bay completed the four-game sweep of Fresno Pacific after taking both games of a doubleheader Saturday, 6-5 via wild pitch in the 10th inning in game one and 8-4 in game two. CSUEB has now won five consecutive games. The pair of wins brings the Pioneers record to 9-2 on the season. The Sunbirds fall to 5-8.
Game One- Cal State East Bay 6, Fresno Pacific 5:After seeing a 5-4 vanish in the ninth inning,
Kris Bartlett scored on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers a 6-5 game one victory. The 10th inning started with Bartlett singling to center to open the inning.
Michael Thomas then walked to advance Bartlett to second. The bases were loaded when
Ryan Wheat singled on a great bunt. Then Bartlett was able to race home to give CSUEB the one-run win.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Pioneers came back with three runs of their own. Wheat tripled in Thomas to tie the game,
Rudy Navarro scored on a wild pitch, and
Troy Resch singled in
Joey Dice.
After the Sunbirds scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead, the Pioneers tied the game in the seventh on a
Chris Porter double that scored Resch. They regained the lead at 5-4 when Wheat singled to right field to score Bartlett.
Wheat totaled 3 for 5 with two RBI's. Resch and Bartlett each had two hit games. Resch went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Bartlett went 2 for 4 with two runs.
Brandon Acosta got the start for the Pioneers going five innings and giving up three earned runs on six hits.
Derek Oetken got the win (2-0) after going the final two innings and giving up no runs on a hit and three strikeouts.
Andrew Fernandez was impressive in a relief effort, going three innings and allowing two hits and striking out three batters.
Game Two: Cal State East Bay 8, Fresno Pacific 4 (7):Cal State East Bay once again jumped on the scoreboard the first inning when singled to left field to score Thomas and lead 1-0.
The Pioneers opened up a 5-0 lead in the third inning when the Pioneers sent 11 batters to the plate.
CSUEB would extend it to 6-0 in the fourth
Myles Babitt tripled to right field to score Wheat.
With the Pioneers up 8-1 in the seventh, the Sunbirds would put three on the scoreboard, but couldn't overcome the big deficit in the four-run loss.
Babitt and Resch both went 2 for 2 with two RBI's in the second game. Navarro went 1 for 3 with two RBI's.
Donavon Ramirez got the start and went five innings giving up just an earned run on five hits with four strikeouts. Ramirez earned his second win against one loss.
Cal State East Bay next plays at Stanislaus State Friday in the CCAA opener for the Pioneers.
