HAYWARD, Calif. -- For the first time in program history, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team is ranked in the top-8 in the West Region. The Pioneers debuted at No. 7 on Wednesday in the first
set of rankings released by the NCAA committee. At 21-4 for the season, CSUEB is just one victory shy of breaking the school record heading into a crucial game against first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday.
The Pioneers will close out
Homecoming 2016 the following night when they host Cal State L.A. Both games are set for 5:30 p.m.
The top eight teams in the West Region will advance to the NCAA Division II tournament. If the Pioneers can hang onto their spot, it would be the program's firts ever trip to the NCAA Div. II postseason. The conference tournament champions for the CCAA, Pacific West Conference, and Great Northwest Athletic Conference also earn automatic bids.Â
The Pioneers currently sit tied for second place with UC San Diego at 15-2 in conference play (although the Tritons hold the head-to-head tie breaker) and a half game behind 15-1 Cal State Dominguez Hills for first place. The Pioneers are 21-4 overall and will be seeking to eclipse the record set in 2002-03 and 2003-04.Â
CSUEB tied the record of 21 wins in a season set by the 2002-03 and 2003-04 Pioneers when they defeated Cal Poly Pomona 54-39 on Saturday.Â
East Bay has already set the school record for victories as a Division II program, and they are receiving votes in the WBCA national rankings for the first time ever. In the game against the Broncos,
Tori Breshers paced her team with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Shannon Bland supported Breshers effort with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Nearly at the end of the regular season, this is the first time Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills are facing each other. The Toros last played Saturday at home against Cal State L.A. and defeated the Golden Eagles 78-70.
The Toros feature the leading scorer in the CCAA, Breanne Garcia, who averages 17.9 points per game. The teams leading rebounder is Kielyn Wilson, who averages 8.5 rebounds a game.
The meeting with the Toros is followed up with the second meeting of the season with Cal State L.A. In the first meeting, the Pioneers squeaked by the Golden Eagles 65-63.
The game was tied at 63 when Bland hit a jumper inside the paint to put the Pioneers up by two with 11 seconds left. The Golden Eagles had two chances inside the paint to send the game to overtime, but missed both and the time expired with the Pioneers ahead on the scoreboard.
CSULA is currently in eighth place and in position to go to the CCAA Championship Tournament if they can remain in the top eight in the conference.
The Golden Eagles are led in scoring by Chiara DiMarco and Franeka Hall, who both average 12.8 points per game. Hall is also the team's leading rebounder with 5.3 a game.
