ARCATA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team jumped out to a huge lead over Humboldt State on Friday evening and held on for a 79-71 road victory at Lumberjack Arena.
The win brings the Pioneers back to .500 overall at 6-6 and improves their record to 3-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The struggling Jacks, meanwhile, fall to 2-10.
East Bay had six players score in double figures and shot 58.5 percent from the field -- including 5-for-11 from long distance -- in perhaps the team's best offensive performance of the season.
The Pioneers took the lead two minutes into the contest and never relinquished it. They out-scored HSU 22-12 in the opening quarter, topped 20 points in each of the first three periods, and took a 42-29 advantage into halftime.
After the break, the visitors continued their hot shooting and stretched the lead out to 25 points just before the end of the third quarter. East Bay ended up winning by eight, but the final score doesn't tell the story of their dominance, as Humboldt clawed back against CSUEB's bench in the fourth.
Overall, it was a dominant effort on the road for the defending conference champs. And in a rare occasion this season, the Pioneers didn't rely on senior
Shomari Harris to be the primary source of offense. Harris had eight points and a team-high six assists, but East Bay spread its scoring around nicely and racked up 40 points in the paint.
Senior
Remy Puou recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt freshman
Morgan Greene, who entered the night as the league's leading rebounder, pulled in six boards and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor for a team-high 14 points.
Freshman Kincso Keleman had her best night as a Pioneer with a season-high 13 points in 22 minutes. She finished 4-for-5 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three point range.
Elayshia Woolridge also scored 13 points, going 6-for-7 from the floor. Rookie
Kayley Hsiung notched a season high 10 points, and sophomore
Bri Guillory added 10 points of her own off the bench.
The Pioneers will attempt to stay hot when they visit Rohnert Park on Saturday night fir a New Year's Eve showdown with Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m.
