SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Three Pioneers scored in double digits as the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team picked up a 63-46 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road win over Sonoma State to close out the 2016 calendar year.
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play. CSUEB will enter 2017 above .500 and with back-to-back conference wins for the second time this season.
Freshman guard Kayley Hsuing led all scorers with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. She added five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal on 31 minutes of game play.
Elayshia Woolridge finished with 11 points off the bench for East Bay. She shot 3-for-6 from the field and 4-for-6 from the foul line. Woolridge had four rebounds and a team high three steals in 20 minutes of action.
Junior
Bri Guillory also scored 10 points in a reserve role for the Lady Pioneers. She shot 3-for-5 from the field knocking down two three-pointer and going a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Guillory added three rebounds in 17 minutes.
Morgan Greene tallied eight points and grabbed a team high six rebounds with one steal on the defensive end. Greene shot 3-for-4 from the floor and an impressive 2-for-2 from the free throw line on 20 minutes of game action.
Shomari Harris turned in an overall great game compiling seven points, a team high four assists, five rebounds and a steal on a team best 32 minutes on the court.
Freshman
Kincso Kelemen put in six points and three rebounds on 2-for-4 shooting accuracy and 2-for-3 from long distance.
Janae Chamois chipped in five points, an assist and a steal in only eight minutes off the bench for the Lady Pioneers. Chamois went 2-for-2 from the foul line.
Remy Puou and
Madison Schiller each added two points for East Bay. Puou finished with two rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal in 30 minutes. Schiller had a rebound and a steal sinking her lone shot attempt of the evening.
The Pioneers out-rebounded the Lady Sea Wolves' 37-30 and out scored them in bench points 28-18.
East Bay dominated the game from the tip outscoring Sonoma State in all four quarters, never relinquishing the the lead and going up by as many as 21 points late in the the fourth quarter.
CSUEB shot 47.4 percent from three-point land and 60 percent from beyond the arc in the the first half.
First year head coach Shanele Stires was very proud of how her team responded after the winter break lay off.
"I am really proud of the way our team bounced back from the Christmas break, Stires said. "Our players level of commitment to our program and to one another was evident all weekend. We had key contributions from our bench, as well as great execution to close out games on a tough back to back road trip. We are excited about the way that we are preparing, playing, and competing and look forward to seeing our players continue to develop in 2017. Our best basketball is still out in front of us."
Madeline Lowe led the Lady Sea Wolves' with 11 points and two rebounds. Kylie Kiech added 10 points and two assists for Sonoma State.
With the loss, Sonoma State dropped to 7-4 and 3-3 in CCAA play.
The Pioneers closed the final weekend of 2016 with a perfect 2-0 record and will return home for "Pack the Wagon" Night against Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, January 5, 2017. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m.
