SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team had its six game win streak snapped as the undefeated San Francisco State Gators defeated the Pioneers 80-65 Saturday evening, December 3 at "The Swamp".
With the loss the Pioneers fall to 1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action and 7-2 overall. This was the first road loss for East Bay on the season.
The SF State Gators (8-0, 2-0 CCAA) used a 50 point second half to pull away from the Pioneers after CSUEB held a 38-30 halftime lead. East Bay stormed out to an early 27-11 lead in the first half, shooting over 60 percent. But the Gators answered back with a 14-0 run, and then opened the second half on another big scoring run to take over the lead.
SF State's full-court press and zone defense gave the Pioneers trouble, as they committed 17 turnovers and couldn't get their offense back in rhythm to gain some momentum in the second half.
Senior guard
Jalen Richard led the Pioneers with 15 points, four assists, four rebounds and a steal in 33 minutes of action. He scored eight of his 15 points in the second half, including going 6-for-8 from the foul line.
Richard has scored in double figures in four consecutive contests.
Senior forward
Micah Dunhour compiled 14 points and tied a team high five rebounds on 31 minutes on the floor. He went 6-for-11 from the field and netted his lone foul shot. Dunhour continued his streak of double digit outings making it seven straight games.
Junior
Kyle Frakes tied a season high with 11 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night. He added three rebounds and a steal, while knocking down his only free throw on the evening.
Frakes is shooting a team leading 66.7 percent accuracy from the field.
Sophomore guard
Juwan Anderson lead East Bay with six assists. He finished the game with two rebounds and a steal. Anderson leads the Pioneers with 43 assists so far on the season.
Druce Asah added eight points and three rebounds for CSUEB.
Pierre Carter,
Drew Bender and
Tre Mauldin all chipped in five points off the bench for the Pioneers.
Lamine Mbodj tied a team high with five rebounds in a reserve role for East Bay.
"Tonight was a game of runs and San Francisco State made the biggest one in the second half," said fourth year head coach
Gus Argenal.
The Gators outscored the Pioneers 50-27 in the second half, as East Bay only shot 30.8 percent after halftime. SF State improved on their 39.3 percent first half accuracy to shoot 47.2 percent after the intermission.
"We did not get consecutive stops and they made some big plays down the stretch," added Argenal.
Warren Jackson led the Gators with 20 points and four assists. Chiefy Ugbaja added 20 points and six rebounds for SF State.
Next up, the Pioneers will head to Santa Clara for an exhibition match against the Division I Broncos on Saturday, December 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Leavey Center. The Pioneers will then return to CCAA play with a visit to Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, December 15 in Kellogg Gymnasium. Tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
