SEASIDE, Calif – Five Pioneers scored in double figures as the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team opened up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a 95-74 victory on the road against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night December 2.
The Pioneers improved to 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in CCAA action. CSUEB is 3-0 in true road games and 5-0 in games away from Pioneer Gymnasium.
Senior
Micah Dunhour put in a career best 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the floor. Dunhour added a team high six rebounds and an assist on 29 minutes of action. He also sunk six of his eight foul shots.
Dunhour has notched double digit scoring games in six consecutive outings and in seven contests this season.
Junior guard
Juwan Anderson fell one assist short of a double-double as he dished out a career high nine assists and collect a career best five steals. Anderson finished with 12 points and three rebounds on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field, including going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
Anderson leads East Bay with 37 assists and 13 steals on the season so far.
Freshman
Druce Asah compiled 15 points, three rebounds, an assists and a steal. He went 6-for-9 shooting for the game and finished 2-for-4 from long distance.
It was Asah's fifth game scoring 15 or more points this season.
Senor
Jalen Richard tallied 13 points, four rebounds and two assists. He shot 5-for-10 for the game and knocked down both of his free throws.
Richard has now scored in double figures in three straight game and in five games overall for the Pioneers.
Senior
Pierre Carter led East Bay with 15 points and four rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench. Carter shot 6-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-4 from three-point land.
Carter is leading the Pioneers bench with 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds.
Senior forward
Lamine Mbodj played quality minutes on the bench for CSUEB and contributed six points and four rebounds in 16 minutes on the court.
East Bay shot 61.9 percent from the field for the game, the best shooting game under fourth year head coach
Gus Argenal. The Pioneers shot 53.3 percent from long distance. CSUEB connected on a season high 39 field goals.
CSUEB outscored Monterey Bay 38-32 in points in the paint, 24-12 in points off turnovers and 11-9 in second chance points.
The Pioneers also dominated the Otters on the glass 36-22, including 11 offensive rebounds.
East Bay exploded for 53 points in the second half of the game, taking a 25-point lead with under five minutes to play in the game.
East Bay head coach
Gus Argenal was proud of the way his team competes and the toughness on defense they displayed in second half.
"Monterey Bay plays extremely hard and is a very explosive team," Argenal said. "In the second half we were able to string stops together and we did a better job of handling their pressure. I was really proud of the way we competed on the road."
Stephen Matthews led the Otters with 23 points off the bench. Jahvon Johnson added 12 points and three assists for Monterey Bay.
With the loss, the Monterey Bay Otters drop to 0-1 in CCAA play and 2-5 overall.
The Pioneers will travel to "The Swamp" to to take on undefeated #5 San Francisco State on Saturday, December 3. Tipoff for the game is 7:30 p.m.
