Cal Poly Pomona Rallies to Hand East Bay Road Loss

POMONA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona handed the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team its first loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday evening, as the Broncos came back from a double-digit deficit to defeat the Pioneers 50-44 at Kellogg Gym.

CPP is now 3-1 in conference games, while the Pioneers fall to 2-1. Both squads are now 5-5 on the season overall.

This game was a tale of two halves, as East Bay out-shot the Broncos 42 percent to 22 percent over the first 20 minutes and led by eight points at halftime. The Pioneers stretched their advantage out to 11 early in the third quarter, but then the home team rallied back to erase its deficit.

Pomona shot 48 percent in the final two periods, compared to just 27 percent for the Pioneers. Despite struggling down the stretch, East Bay still had a chance with the score tied 42-42 with 2:54 left in the game. But the Broncos held onto their momentum and scored on four straight possessions over the next two minutes to go up 50-42 and put the game away.

CSUEB finished with a slight rebounding advantage, but they had a particularly rough night shooting from long distance. As a team, they went 5-for-24 from three-point range, including 1-for-12 in the second half.

Senior Shomari Harris was just 1-for-5 from deep, but nonetheless turned in an impressive effort with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting. She played all 40 minutes, pulled in six rebounds, and notched a season-high eight assists.

Sophomore Elayshia Woolridge and freshman Kayley Hsiung were the only other Pioneers to make multiple field goals, finishing with eight and five points, respectively. Woolridge also led the team with four steals, and Hsiung added three.

Shontalene Trudeau matched Harris with a team-high six boards, while Remy Puou and Morgan Greene pulled in five rebounds each.

After posting a 2-2 record in four straight games away from Pioneer Gym, East Bay finally returns to Hayward on Monday for a 3 p.m. CCAA contest against Cal State L.A.
