Pioneer Men Concludes Road Trip with Visit to Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team will conclude its none game road trek with trips to Pomona to face California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Cal Poly on Thursday, December 15 and the Pioneers will complete its road gauntlet with an exhibition matchup against Stanford on Friday, December 16.
 
CSUEB has begun the 2016-17 season in record fashion getting off to a 7-2 start, the best in program history since joining to CCAA in 2009-10.
 
The Pioneers are currently tied for ninth in the DII West Region Media Poll.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneers fell 50-75 in their exhibition matchup against Santa Clara on Saturday, December 10.
 
CSUEB jumped out to a 20-12 lead midway through the first half, but the Broncos claimed a 38-28 lead at intermission.
 
The Pioneers were led in scoring by senior forward Micah Dunhour with 18 points on a career best four three-pointers. Dunhour added three rebounds, one assist and one block on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. He has scored in double digits in eight consecutive contests.
 
Senior guard Paramvir Singh added a season best six points and a team high seven rebounds for East Bay off the bench. Singh went a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
 
Pierre Carter finished with six points and a rebound on 15 minutes of action. Jalen Richard chipped in five points, four rebounds, an assist and a block for East Bay. Sophomore guard Juwan Anderson led the Pioneers with two assists. Anderson scored two points in 13 minutes on the floor.
 
Jelani Mitchell tallied three points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Ja-Mont Wislon grabbed four rebounds, with one point and a block.
 
Junior guard Drew Bender compiled four points and Kyle Frakes added three points, three rebounds, one assist and a steal.
 
The Pioneers outscored the Broncos in bench points 20-17.
 
PIONEER POINTS
East Bay has two scorers in the top-20 of the the CCAA and one Pioneer in the top-3. Senior forward Micah Dunhour leads East Bay with 17.2 points per game and currently sits second in the conference. Dunhour is currently eight in the CCAA in rebounding grabbing a team-leading 7.0 per contest. He has eight double figure scoring efforts, including seven consecutive, with three double double and 49.6 percent accuracy from the field, which is seventh in the conference.
 
Dunhour's 32.8 minutes per outing ranks fourth in the conference.
 
Freshman wing Druce Asah is putting in 13.3 points per game, 17th in the CCAA on 52.6 percent shooting from the floor and 53.3 percent from three-point range which is good for third in the conference. Asah leads the the Pioneers with 24 made three-pointer so far on the season.
 
Sophomore point guard Juwan Anderson leads the CCAA with 5.4 assists per game. Anderson is also first in the conference in assist to turnover ratio (2.9) with 43 assists and 15 turnovers through eight games. He is adding 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds a team leading 1.8 steals on 48.6 percent shooting from the floor and a perfect 1.000 percent from the charity stripe knocking down all 12 of his foul shots.
 
Anderson ranks tenth in the conference in steals.  
 
Senior guard Jalen Richard is chipping in 12.1 points, third on the team, and collecting 5.8 rebounds, second on the Pioneers and 17th in the CCAA. Richard is 16th in the conference with 1.4 steals per game and is second on CSUEB with 13 steals. He is dishing out 2.3 assists, third on the team.
 
Junior center Kyle Frakes is leading the Pioneers shooting 66.7 percent from the floor. Frakes is averaging 6.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.
 
Senior Pierre Carter and junior Drew Bender are pacing the Pioneer bench so this season.
 
Carter is leading the Pioneer bench with 8.4 points and 3.1 rebounds on 26.1 minutes of action. He has three double digits scoring games on the season.
 
Bender is tallying 6.0 points and his 2.4 assists is second on the team. He is shooting 88.9 percent from the free throw line.
 
East Bay is sixth in the CCAA in scoring offense averaging 73.8 points per contest. The Pioneers are ninth in scoring defense only allowing 69.4 points from opponents.
 
CSUEB is tied for seventh in the conference with 76 three-pointers made so far this season and also fourth in rebounding defense, grabbing a little over 33 rebounds per game.
 
The Pioneers are fourth in the CCAA averaging 13.6 assists per game, with 123 total and fourth in the conference with 7.56 steals per outing, including 68 total.  
 
East Bay is shooting 72.2 percent from the free throw line as a team, which ranks fifth in the CCAA. The Pioneers are sinking 44.3 percent of their shots from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc.
 
SCOUTING CAL POLY POMONA
The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos are 2-5 on the season and are 0-3 in CCAA play. They are coming off an 83-64 loss to Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, December 10. Jordan Ogundiran leads the Broncos with 16.3 points and 5.4 rebounds. Jeremy Dennis is adding 11.3 points and 5.1 rebounds for Cal Poly Pomona.
 
The Pioneers are 0-6 against the Broncos under fourth year head coach Gus Argenal.
 
SCOUTING STANFORD
The Stanford Cardinal are 6-3 on the year and are coming off an 89-74 loss on the road to #4 Kansas. Travis Reid leads the Cardinal with 17.7 points and 9.4 rebounds. Dorian Pickens is contributing 13.0 points and 4.1 rebounds for Stanford.
 
This is the first matchup between these teams in program history.
