Three Pioneers Notch 20 Points in Exhibition Against San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif –
The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team finished with three 20 point scorers in its road exhibition matchup against San Jose State at The Event Center on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers fell 96-80 to the Division I Spartans in their first action against outside competition.
 
Micah Dunhour, Druce Asah and Drew Bender, all of whom are coming off redshirt seasons, led East Bay with 20 points apiece. Dunhour shot 8-for-16 from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. He also tied for the team lead with five rebounds, dished out two assists, and connected on both free throws in 27 minutes of game action.
 
Asah went 7-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. The Tracy native matched Dunhour with five rebounds and finished with one steal in 26 minutes on the court.
 
Bender led the Pioneer bench by going 7-for-13 while knocking down a team-best five shots from long distance. Bender ended with two assists, a rebound and a steal on a team high 29 minutes.
 
Sophomore newcomer Juwan Anderson led CSUEB with three assists while adding four points, a steal and a rebound in 25 minutes. Senior Jalen Richard, the team's leading scorer in 2015-16, struggled from long distance, but still tallied seven points, three rebounds and a team-leading two steals.
 
The Pioneers shot 40.6 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from three-point land, as they outscored San Jose State 49-45 in the second half of the game.
 
Ryan Welage led the Spartans with 22 points and five rebounds.
 
The Pioneers will begin the regular season on Friday, November 11 at home  against Notre Dam De Namur as apart of the Pioneer Veteran's Day Challenge. The 2016-17 regular season opener will tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Pioneer Gymnasium.
