ST. GEORGE, Utah -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team traveled out of state for the second straight week to start the season and came away victorious on Monday evening, defeating Dixie State 68-52 in non-conference action at Burns Arena.
The Pioneers bounced back after two straight losses to even their record at 2-2, while the Red Storm fall to 0-5. East Bay won decisively despite shooting just 37.1 percent from the floor and 19 percent from three-point range (4-for-21). They were a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line and won the turnover battle, 22 to 12, racking up 17 steals.
Senior
Shomari Harris led the way with 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting and dished out a team-high four assists.
Bri Guillory returned to action and notched 13 points and three steals. Senior
Remy Puou also reached double figures with 12 points and pulled in nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
The home team led most of the way in a tight first quarter. But two free throws by Guillory tied the score with a minute left, and a layup by Harris off a turnover on the next possession gave East Bay a 14-12 lead.
The Pioneers led the entire way after that. They opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run and never looked back, taking a 29-23 lead into halftime. They stretched the lead out to 14 in the third, but Dixie rallied back to get it within single digits. Leading by seven early in the fourth quarter, the East Bay rattled off a 14-0 run, capped off by back-to-back layups by Puou, to make it a 21-point advantage.
"We had a tremendous week of preparation, our team was focused, and everyone was ready when their number was called," said head coach Shanele Stires. "I couldn't be prouder of the way we shared the basketball. The leadership of our senior captains, Remy, Shonte, and Shomari, was excellent."
Redshirt freshman
Morgan Greene notched double-digit rebounds for the third time in four games with 11 boards in 23 minutes off the bench. Fellow post player
Grace Varcoe had a big impact as well, filling up the score sheet with five rebounds and five steals, both season highs.
Shontalene Trudeau added six points, and freshman
Kincso Kelemen notched a season high with seven points on 3-for-6 shooting.
Next up, the Pioneers return home to celebrate the holiday before hosting Dominican and Academy of Art on Saturday and Sunday as part of the second annual Thanksgiving Shootout at Pioneer Gym.
