HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team picked up its second straight win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Dominican 78-62 to close out the first day of the Thanksgiving Shootout at Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Pioneers improve to 3-2 in non-conference play after shooting 50 percent from the field for the game. They had four players finish in double figures and were red hot from long distance as a group, going 8-for-15 (53.3 percent).
East Bay once again had trouble with turnovers and fouls, totaling 23 and 25, respectively. However they dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Penguins 48-25, led by
Remy Puou and
Morgan Greene each with double-digit boards.
"We got off to a slow start and our bigs got into early foul trouble, but we weathered the storm and pulled together for a tremendous win," said head coach
Shanele Stires. "I really like the way we are sharing the basketball. This was our second game in a row with double-digit assists."
The Pioneers trailed early in a tight first quarter. Dominican led 16-11 late in the period -- its biggest advantage of the evening -- but the Pioneers scored on their final possession on a jumper by
Kincso Kelemen to make it a three-point game after the first period.
That bucket keyed a 17-4 run by East Bay that carried into the second quarter. They extended their lead to double digits, racking up 27 points in the period to take a 40-30 advantage into halftime.
The Pioneers continued their hot shooting and impressive rebounding in the second half and stretched their lead out over the final two quarters to pull away for the 16-point win.
"I'm so proud of the way our team has continued to show great resiliency," Stires noted. "We missed Bri tonight, but Elayshia and Kincso were terrific, and our seniors continue to shine. Shomari and Remy both had big games to lead us."
Shomari Harris led East Bay with 17 points and five assists, going 3-for-5 from long range. Puou notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds on 6-for-9 shooting.
Elayshia Woolridge scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting and grabbed four steals. Kelemen finished with 12 points and five boards, going 4-for-6 from the field in 25 minutes off the bench. Both players notched career highs in scoring.
Janae Chamois added nine points in 17 minutes, and
Shontalene Trudeau contributed seven rebounds and four points in 18 minutes.
Grace Varcoe turned in an excellent performance off the bench with six points and six boards on 3-for-4 shooting.
Greene finished with 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, reaching double figures for the fourth time in five games. She currently leads the CCAA in rebounding (10.0 per game), while Puou ranks third (9.2).
The Pioneers are back on the court on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the Thanksgiving Shootout with a 4 p.m. game against Academy of Art.
