Pioneer Men's Hoops Continues Road Trip with Bay Area Matchup

HAYWARD, Calif – The Cal State East Bay men's will play the second game of it's nine game road trip with a Bay Area matchup against Holy Names University on Tuesday night November 22 at Tobin Gymnasium in Oakland, Calif.
 
The Pioneers defeated the Hawks 68-46 in last season's matchup in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
CSUEB got off to a 3-1 start, the best under fourth year head coach Gus Argenal, after defeating Montana State-Billings on the road 54-50 on Saturday night November 19. It was East Bay's third consecutive win over the Yellowjackets in as many seasons.
 
Senior Micah Dunhour posted his second double-double with 15 points, including 13 in the second half and 11 rebounds, both team highs. Dunhour shot 2-for-4 from long distance and added an assists on a team best 37 minutes.
 
Senior guard Jalen Richard, the teams leading returning scorer, finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. For Richard it was his second double digit scoring effort of the season. He added two steals and an assist in 34 minutes on the court.
 
Sophomore Juwan Anderson led the Pioneers with three assists. Anderson had led East Bay in assists in every game this season. He tallied six points, four rebounds and a steal while knocking down all four of his foul shots in the final minutes of the game to help seal the win for East Bay.
 
Drew Bender led the Pioneer bench with nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Bender went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
 
Pierre Carter compiled six points, a team best three steals and two rebounds for the Pioneers.
 
East Bay topped Montana State-Billings in the battle of the boards 35-33. The Pioneers controlled the points in the paint 28-22 and bench points 17-6.
 
The stingy Pioneer defense held the Yellowjackets to 33 percent shooting from the field and 23.8 percent accuracy from beyond the arc.
 
After getting off to a rough start offensively, East Bay turned things around by shooting 44.8 percent shooting from the floor.
 
PIONEER POINTS
CSUEB has two players in the top-20 of scoring in the CCAA. Micah Dunhour leads the Pioneers with a 14.0 per game scoring clip and sits 17th in the conference. Dunhour is also currently seventh in the CCAA with 7.8 rebounds per outing, which also leads East Bay. He has three double digits scoring efforts along with two double double so far on the season.
 
Druce Asah is putting in 13.0 points per game on 60 percent shooting from the field and 52.9 percent accuracy from beyond the arc, which is good for third in the CCAA. Asah leads the Pioneers with nine made three-point field goals so far on the season.
 
Juwan Anderson is fourth in the conference with a team-leading 5.0 assists per outing. Anderson is fifth in the CCAA in assist to turnover ratio with 20 assists and only nine turnovers through four contests. He is averaging 7.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Anderson is shooting a perfect 1.000 percent from the foul line knocking down all eight of his free throws this season.
 
Junior Kyle Frakes is shooting a team-high 66.7 percent from the floor and 1.000 percent from the charity stripe. Frakes is averaging 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
 
Senior Jalen Richard is tallying 9.5 points per game, third on the team, with 6.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists, both second on the team.
 
Pierre Carter is leading the Pioneers bench with 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest.
 
East Bay is eighth in the CCAA in scoring offense, averaging 71.3 points per game. The Pioneers are sixth in scoring defense only allowing 70.5 points from opposing teams.
 
CSUEB is sixth in the conference with 31 three-pointers made so far this season and also sixth in rebounding defense, grabbing a little over 22 rebounds per game.
 
The Pioneers are third in the CCAA with 14 assists per game, including 56 total assists and are currently fourth in steal with 8.7 steals per game and 35 steals overall.
 
SCOUTING HOLY NAMES
The Holy Names Hawks are coming off a road loss to Western Washington 94-68. The Hawks finished the 2015-16 season with a record of 3-17 PAC West conference record and 4-24 overall record. Jason Webster leads the Hawks scoring 17 points per game and grabbing 5.3 rebounds. Jewels Sanders is adding 16 points and 2.6 rebounds for Holy Names.
