HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team dropped its 2016-17 home opener on Wednesday night, falling 55-54 to Menlo College in non-conference action.
The Pioneers drop to 1-2 on the season after shooting 34.0 percent for the night and finishing 7-for-16 from long distance. They out-rebounded the Oaks, 42-29, but committed 18 turnovers, including several costly ones late in the fourth quarter.
Junior newcomer
Janae Chamois led the Pioneers and posted a career high with 13 points, going 5-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-4 from three-point range. Senior
Remy Puou finished with nine points and had a monster night on the glass. She notched a career high of her own with 15 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
East Bay jumped out to an early advantage in the first quarter. They led 13-4 after a three-pointer by
Shomari Harris, and held a 19-8 lead after the period. But slowly Menlo clawed back in it, as the Pioneers struggled to consistently get shots to fall and avoid turnovers. After the Oaks closed the second quarter on a 7-0 run, East Bay led by just three points heading into halftime.Â
The second half was tight the entire way, and the teams found themselves knotted at 49-49 with three and a half minutes to play. After trading a couple buckets, Puou scored on a put-back to give CSEUB a 54-51 lead. However, two free throws by Menlo's Aliyah Brantley made the score 54-53, and the Pioneers turned the ball over on their final two possessions, giving the Oaks one last chance with seven seconds left. Emma Rigby took it all the way to the basket for Menlo, finishing with a right-hand layup with three seconds left that proved to be the game-winner.
Freshman
Morgan Greene totaled seven points and eight rounds off the bench, and junior
Marianne Fernandez added seven points thanks to a pair of triples in the first half.Â
Senior
Shomari Harris and sophomore
Bri Guillory combined to average 39 points in the two games at Western Oregon last week. Tonight they totaled just eight, as Guillory missed the game with an injury and Harris suffered a 1-for-9 shooting performance. She filled up the score sheet nonetheless, tallying seven rebounds and leading the team with six assists, three steals, and 37 minutes.
Next up, the Pioneers head out of state once again for a non-conference game at Dixie State in St. George, Utah. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. next Monday, Nov. 21.
