East Bay Women Upended by Western Oregon, 73-63

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling on the road at Western Oregon, 73-63, to close out the season-opening WOU/Hampton Inn D2 Shootout, hosted by the Wolves.

The Pioneers fell behind early, as WOU was hot in the first half. East Bay never allowed the game to get away from them, but they also never managed an extended scoring run to cut into their deficit. The Wolves took a nine-point advantage into halftime, and they maintained that down the stretch.

CSUEB had an efficient night from the floor, out-shooting Western Oregon 46.4 percent to 44.3 percent for the game. However, the Pioneers struggled from long distance, finishing 4-for-15, and they hurt themselves with 17 turnovers.

"Western Oregon is a first class program, and the opportunity for us to go on the road early in the year is great for our team's growth," said head coach Shanele Stires. "Give them credit, they were one step ahead of us most of the afternoon."

The Wolves led by four after the first quarter, then they caught fire in the second and led by as many as 17 before the Pioneers finished the half on a 6-0 run. East Bay's best chance to rally back came in the third period, but they weren't able to get closer than seven points.

Senior Shomari Harris had another huge night offensively, leading all players in the game with 23 points. She finished 9-for-17 from the field with a pair of three-pointers, four rebounds, and a team-high three assists. The transfer from Texas A&M-Commerce reached the 20-point mark in both contests at the season-opening tournament.

Redshirt freshman Morgan Greene notched a double-digit rebound performance for the second straight day and posted her first double-double with 11 points and 10 boards in 32 minutes off the bench.

Bri Guillory also finished with 11 points to go along with four rebounds. Senior Remy Puou made it four Pioneers in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting before fouling out.

Senior Shontalene Trudeau added three points and three boards, while freshman Madison Schiller tallied five points and a team-high three steals in 23 minutes.

"Early foul trouble and poor box-out execution really haunted us tonight," Stires added. "We knew was had an advantage inside, but a few early fouls really slowed us down. I'm really proud of how we hung in there against a very tough team on the road, but we have to take better care of the ball. We look forward to improving in those areas next time out."

With a 1-1 non-conference record, the Pioneers now return to Hayward for their home opener this Wednesday evening, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. vs. Menlo College.
