HURRICANE, Utah -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the 2016-17 on Tuesday, finishing 12th at the Dixie State Invitational.Â
The Pioneers shot 319 (+31) in the second round at Sand Hollow Golf Course, improving their total from Monday by 10 strokes. They finished the 36-hole event at 648 (+72), just one stroke behind 11th place Arizona Christian and four strokes behind Colorado Mesa in 10th.
Five of East Bay's six golfers shot better in the second round than the first, led by newcomer
Julia Youn, who fired the low score of the day with a 77 (+5). She finished in a tie for 40th in the overall field with a total of 159 (+15) in her Pioneer debut.
CSUEB's low score for the tournament came from
Ariel Caro, who followed up Monday's 77 with a 79 (+7) on Tuesday. The sophomore ended up with a share of 35th place at 156 (+12).
Sienna Starck and
Taylor Wyss carded 81 (+9) and 82 (+10), respectively, for the third and fourth Pioneer team scores. Both women carved a few strokes off their first-round totals, as Starck finished at 165 (+21) and Wyss finished at 168 (+24) overall.
Kelsi Valenzuela and
Addie Hemming both shot 90 on Monday, but they both made huge improvements on Tuesday. Valenzuela bounced back with an 82 (+10), while Hemming turned in an 83 (+11), giving the pair respective two-round totals of 172 (+28) and 173 (+29).Â
The Pioneers now have a brief return to Hayward before heading out-of-state again this weekend. They travel to compete in the Western Washington Invitational on Oct. 10-11 at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.Â
