KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team turned in its third straight solid round on Tuesday to close out the 2016-17 NCAA Division II Preview, hosted by Saint Leo University on the Tom Watson Course at Reunion Resort.
The Pioneers carded 292 (+4) as a group to finish the 54-hole tournament at 878 (+14), good for 11th place in the 18-team field. Lynn University shot three under par in the third round to finish -19 and win the tournament by four strokes over Florida Southern.Â
All 10 teams ahead of the Pioneers are ranked in the top 15 nationally, and Cal State East Bay bested two top-25 squads in No. 17 Central Missouri and No. 21 Carson-Newman.
Adam Stone wrapped up the first tournament of his senior year with another strong performance, shooting 71 (-1) to finish the week at 214 (-2) and secure a share of 15th place individually.
Fellow senior
Owen Hutchison matched Stone's 71 (-1), thanks in part to an eagle on the 17th hole. It was his lowest round of the tournament, moving him into a tie for 31st at 219 (+3) overall.
Three CSUEB newcomers made their Pioneer debuts this week, and the most impressive one came from freshman
Max Murai, who competed individually. He racked up 16 more pars on Tuesday and finished the tournament with 42, the second-most of any golfer in the field. Murai fired 74 (+2) for the second round in a row, giving him a total score of 223 (+7) and a share of 60th place.
Another rookie,
Chris Carney, didn't compete like it was his first collegiate tournament either. The England native carded his best score of the week in the third round, matching Murai's 74 (+2) and putting him just two strokes behind for the week at 225 (+9).Â
Sophomore
Jonathan Mulvany finished just behind Carney at 226 (+10) in a tie for 69th place. After strong play on Monday, Mulvany stumbled a bit with an 80 (+8) in the final round.Â
Senior
Barrett Taylor contributed the fourth Pioneer team score on Tuesday, notching his second straight solid round with a 76 (+4) to close out the tournament tied for 80th at 231 (+15).
Newcomer
Ben Olson rounded out CSUEB's week with an 85 (+13), giving the junior a 54-hole total of 252 (+36).Â
With high expectations heading into 2016-17, the defending conference champion Pioneers acquitted themselves well against an extremely talented field and showed they can play with the best in the nation. East Bay will hope to return to Kissimmee in May for the NCAA DII Championships, but in the meantime, the squad will prepare for next week's Sonoma State Fall Invitational Oct. 10-11 at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park, Calif.
