VISTA, Calif. -- The No. 23 ranked Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished its Fall schedule with a strong performance in the final round of the Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic at the par-71 Vista Valley Country Club. The Pioneers leaped three spots in the leaderboard on Tuesday to finish fifth in the 17-team event.
East Bay, which debuted in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Bushnell Golfweek national top-25 poll last week, shot 298 (+10) as a team in the third round. It was their lowest total of the tournament and the third-best score of any team in the field on Tuesday. They finished the 54-hole event at 910 (+58), beating 12 schools including conference rival Stanislaus State.
Adam Stone paced the Pioneers with a runner-up individual finish, his third straight top-five finish of the Fall. Stone carded 73 (+2) on Tuesday to finish at 217 (+4), eight strokes behind the individual medalist from the tournament champion, Victoria University. Stone led the entire field with 40 pars over the three rounds.Â
Fellow senior
Owen Hutchison fired the best round of the day for CSUEB with a 70 (-1), moving him all the way up from 19th place Monday to a fifth place finish with a total score of 221 (+8).
Freshman
Chris Carney shot his best score of the weekend in the third round as well, carding 76 (+5) to earn a share of 44th place at 236 (+23). Fellow rookie
Max Murai also tied for 44th identical total of 236 after shooting 79 (+8) on Tuesday.
Sophomore
Jonathan Mulvany turned in a 79 (+8) to end up in a tie for 56th place at 249 (+27).
The Pioneers have wrapped up a successful Fall, and will now prepare for the Spring as they look to defend their CCAA team championship and remain among the top-ranked teams in the nation. Their next competition will be the DII Regional Preview tournament, starting Feb. 13 at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Stockton, Calif.
