Bland's Big Jumper Seals 11th Straight Win

LOS ANGELES-- With the game tied at 63 and Cal State East Bay's 10 game winning streak in jeopardy, senior Shannon Bland scored the last of her 20 points on a jumper with 11 seconds left. The Pioneers would hold-off the last two field goal attempts by Cal State Los Angeles to make it 11 consecutive wins in the 65-63 Pioneer victory Friday at the Eagles' Nest.

The victory sends the first-place Pioneers to 7-0 in the CCAA and 13-2 overall. The Golden Eagles' conference record falls to 1-5 in the conference and 3-9 overall.

The Pioneers would take a 17-12 lead into the second quarter, but fall behind 23-21 after the Golden Eagles went on a 11-4 run. The Pioneers would stop the Golden Eagle momentum before the end of the half and go on a 14-5 run to go to the locker room up 35-28.

The Golden Eagles would claw-back in the third quarter at tie it at 43 before senior Madison Craig hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds to put the Pioneers up by three. The Golden Eagles would answer right back before the end of the third to send it to the fourth quarter trailing 46-45.

Cal State East Bay appeared to grab control of the game when Bland hit a jumper with 4:04 left to put the Pioneers up 57-48, but the Golden Eagles would answer again and eventually tie it at 63 with 14 seconds left.

But when the going got tough, the Pioneers got going. Bland capped-off a great two game stretch with a jumper to seal another win for Cal State East Bay.

"There's no such thing as an ugly win. You can call it gutsy, rough or hard-fought," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "As a team, we know have a target on our backs. Our opponents, tonight it was CSLA are playing tough, passionate basketball and we have struggled to raise-up to their level."

Bland's 20 points came on 8-14 shooting and gave her 45 points combined in Thursday's win over Cal State San Marcos and Friday's win over Cal State L.A.

Senior Tori Breshers had a great all-around game scoring 14 points, grabbing five rebounds, stealing the ball five times, and blocking two shots. The five steals was a season-high for Breshers.

"Shannon (Bland) and Tori (Breshers) gave us a big offensive and defensive lift tonight. It was much needed," said Barcomb.

Junior Remy Puou had a season-high eight rebounds to go with eight points. Senior Laci Effenberger got a team-high four assists to go along with eight points.

Craig had eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Senior Ashleigh Anderson had six points and five rebounds.

Cal State East Bay had their best shooting night of the season thus far, connecting on 48.1% (25-52) of their field goals, while they held the Golden Eagles to 33.9% (19-56) shooting. A big reason the Golden Eagles were able to keep the game close was they were able to convert 23 Pioneer turnovers into 22 points, while the Pioneers converted 19 Golden Eagle turnovers into 12 points. The Pioneers outscored the Golden Eagles, 28-20 in points in the paint.

Cal State East Bay takes the court Jan.15 at Pioneer Gymnasium against fellow CCAA powerhouse, UC San Diego. UC San Diego enters Saturday's matchup with Cal State L.A. at 6-1 in the CCAA and 11-2 overall.

Tip-off is set for 5:30.
