11-Game Win Streak Halted In Narrow Loss to #23 UCSD

Hayward, Calif. -- In a game that saw eight ties and came down to the final seconds, Cal State East Bay came up two points short to have their 11 game winning streak snapped and suffer their first CCAA loss of the season.

The Pioneers are 7-1 in the conference and 13-3 overall. The Tritons improve to 8-1 in the CCAA and 13-2 overall. Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated to go 9-0 in the conference and take over first place. The Tritons move into second place and the Pioneers are now third.

The Pioneers faced a 30-21 deficit entering the second half after being outscored 17-9 in the second quarter, but the Pioneers would roll-off the first six points of the third quarter to trail 30-27. The Tritons would build the lead back to 34-27, but the Pioneers wouldn't let the game get away from them and tied the game at 40 after Remy Puou hit a layup with 9:55 remaining in the game.

The Tritons got the next seven points to make it 47-40 and the Pioneers were entering dangerous territory in the fourth quarter. Like they did all night, the Pioneers fought back with a 7-0 run to tie it at 47.

"This was a hard-fought CCAA game and it was obvious something was on the line. Both teams showed heart and what more can a coach ask for," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "I thought if we could hold them below 60 points we might have a shot at winning."

The remainder of the game would be a free throw shooting contest and Shannon Bland sank two free throws with 33 seconds left to make it 55-54 Tritons. The Pioneers weren't able to get any closer and no look forward to their next matchup Saturday.

Bland, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week had 22 points on 8-18 shooting to make it 67 points in her last three games. Bland also grabbed seven rebounds and two steals. The seven rebounds tied her for the team lead with Tori Breshers and Remy Puou. Puou had 10 points and Breshers got five. Laci Effenberger had nine points and five rebounds.

The Tritons shot 34.5% (19-55) to the Pioneers 33.3% (18-54). The Pioneers hit 78.9% (15-19), while the Tritons shot 69.6% (16-23) from the charity-stripe. Cal State East Bay had five more rebounds (42-37) than UC San Diego.

"This one stings and we will see what we are made of tomorrow when we need to bounce back mentally, emotionally, and physically," said Barcomb.

Cal State East Bay has a quick tunaround as they host Cal State San Bernardino at Pioneer Gymnasium on Saturday. Tip-off is 5:30 P.M.
