HAYWARD, Calif.-- Cal State East Bay comeback bid against Cal State San Bernardino came up a point short in a 64-63 CCAA loss. The Pioneers conference record drops to 7-2 and 13-4 overall. The Coyotes are now 6-4 in the conference and 9-5 overall.
The Pioneers were attempting to rebound after suffering their first CCAA loss Friday to UC San Diego, 56-54, against the fifth-place Coyotes.
The Pioneers opened up an 11-4 lead in the first, but the Coyotes responded with a 7-0 run to tie it. The Coyotes ended the first quarter up 17-16.
The Coyotes were able to extend their lead by outscoring the Pioneers 18-10 in the second to enter the locker room up nine.
The second half saw the Pioneers fall behind by as many 15 before they started to chip-away at the Coyote lead. Down 44-29, the Pioneers closed out the third on a 13-4 run to enter the final quarter trailing 48-42.
The Pioneers forced a 52-52 tie when
Laci Effenberger hit a three-pointer with 3:43 left and things were looking up for Cal State East Bay.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead at 55-54 and pushed the lead to 59-54 when Effenberger hit the second of her four three-pointers with 1:58 left.
It wasn't meant to be as the Coyotes outscored the Pioneers 10-4 the rest of the way to end the weekend on a sour note for Cal State East Bay.

Shannon Bland continued to light-up the scoreboard with 26 points on 11-20 shooting and a team-high nine rebounds. That makes 93 points in four games for the reigning CCAA Player of the Week. The 26 points is a new career-high for Bland.
The other two Pioneers in double-figures for the Pioneers were Effenberger and
Ashleigh Anderson, who had 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Bland and
Madison Craig led the team in assists with three. Effenberger and
Katrina Bacovcin each had two steals.
The Coyotes shot 48.1% (26-54) to the Pioneers 41.5% (22-53). The Coyotes won on points in the paint by a 24-14 margin and also won the second chance point's category 8-0.
Cal State East Bay starts a string of three straight road games beginning with San Francisco State Friday.
