Bland's Career Night Helps Pioneers to 10th Straight Win

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Senior Shannon Bland's career-high 25 points was a big contributing factor in Cal State East Bay's 57-50 CCAA victory over Cal State San Marcos Thursday at MiraCosta College. It is the Pioneers 10th win in a row and bumps their CCAA record to 6-0 and 12-2 overall. The Cougars dropped to 2-5 in the conference and 3-7 overall.

The game was closely contested throughout and saw the Pioneers end the first quarter behind 13-11. It wouldn't take long for the Pioneers to take the lead in the second. At 9:06 of the second quarter, senior Madison Craig hit a layup to make it 15-13 Pioneers and while they were tested the rest of the night the Pioneers wouldn't relinquish the lead and maintain first place in the CCAA.

"We barely had enough offense to earn a very tough road win. San Marcos defended us incredibly well for the entire game," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb.

Bland scored her career-high 25 points on 9-15 from the field and 3-5 from the beyond the arc. Bland also grabbed five rebounds.

"Shannon (Bland) was outstanding on the offensive end of the floor, helping us to the win," said Barcomb.

Craig had a great all-around game with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. The steals and assists were both team-highs.

Senior Ashleigh Anderson and junior Remy Puou led the way in rebounding for the Pioneers, with seven and six rebounds, respectively. Anderson also added three assists to her stat line. Senior Tori Breshers had eight points and four rebounds.

The Pioneers shot 39.3% (22-56) from the field compared with the Cougars 35.3% (18-51). The stats for the game reflect the close-nature of the conference affair, but the 8-0 advantage in second chance points in the seven point win was an important factor for the Pioneers.

Cal State East Bay completes their two game road trip Friday with a matchup against Cal State L.A. before heading home to face UC San Diego Jan. 15 and Cal State San Bernardino the next day.

Tip-off for the matchup against Cal State L.A. is 5:30 P.M.
