VALLEJO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished in sixth place at the 2015 NCAA West/South Central Regional after shooting 299 (+11) as a team in Wednesday's final round at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.
Despite firing the third-lowest score of the day, the Pioneers just missed earning a spot in the NCAA National Championships. They finished the 54-hole tournament at 916 (+52), three strokes behind fifth-place West Texas A&M. The top five schools in the 20-team field advance to Nationals.
East Bay entered the final round tied for eighth place, 11 strokes out of fifth. The squad turned in its best performance of the week and made a strong push up the standings, but it wasn't quite enough to extend their season.
The Pioneers were led by two individuals who placed in the top 10 of the overall field of 108 golfers.
Adam Stone shot 75 (+3) on Wednesday, finishing with a share of fourth place at 219 (+3). The sophomore ended up just one stroke short of advancing to the NCAA Championships as an individual.
The top two golfers not on a qualifying team earn a berth to the national tournament in Conover, N.C. Stone finished one stroke behind Josh Aguilar of Dallas Baptist, who matched the low round of the day with a 69 (-3) to advance at 218 (+2).
In his final collegiate round,
A.J. Hebert carded even-par 72 for East Bay's lowest score of the day and the senior's best round of the tournament. At one point, he recorded pars on 10 straight holes before notching two birdies and a bogey to close out the day. Hebert's three-round total of 222 (+6) was good enough for a ninth-place finish.
After shooting 81 in each of the first two rounds, junior
Joel Keylor had an outstanding showing on Wednesday with a 75 (+3). Five birdies helped him move up to 62nd place in the overall field with a total of 237 (+21).
Sam Lavelle also had a solid showing to close out his Pioneer career, turning in East Bay's fourth team score with a 77 (+5) in the final round. It was the senior's best score of the tournament, and it put him 69th place at 239 (+23). Lavelle's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 11th hole, where a brilliant iron shot from the fairway found the bottom of the hole.
Freshman
Ignacio Ognian rounded out CSUEB's day with an 81 (+9) in the final round, giving him a share of 88th place at 244 (+28) overall.
Although the Pioneers fell short in their bids to capture a CCAA Championship two weeks ago and advance to NCAA Championships this week, they nonetheless played stellar golf over the last month to close out the most successful season in program history.
