GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team shot its lowest round of the 2014-15 season on Tuesday to finish in seventh place at the Mustang Intercollegiate, hosted by Western New Mexico University at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club.
With an even-par sore of 288, the Pioneers finished with a three-round total of 885 (+21), which is their lowest tournament score of the year. East Bay finished 24 strokes behind the team champion, WNMU. They bested nine schools in the 16-team field, including conference rivals Cal State Stanislaus (+27) and Cal State San Bernardino (+27) -- a significant accomplishment for the Pioneer men as they look to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II West Regional.
CSUEB had three golfers shoot even par or better on the tournament's final day, the first time the squad has accomplished that feat in 2014-15.
East Bay's top individual finisher for the week was senior
A.J. Hebert, who finished with a total score of 221 (+5). His final round score of 75 (+3) put him in a tie for 22nd place in the overall field of 88 golfers.
A pair of Lancaster, England natives ended up with a share of 28th place, as sophomore
Adam Stone and senior
Sam Lavelle both finished at 222 (+6). Stone had his best round of the tournament with a 71 (-1) on Tuesday, while Lavelle carded even-par 72.
Junior
Joel Keylor turned in his best round of the season and fired the lowest score of the day for the Pioneers with a 70 (-2). He finished in a tie for 50th place individually at 227 (+11).
Freshman
Ignacio Ognian also carded his lowest score of the week in the final round, shooting 75 (+5) and moving up to 66th place overall at 231 (+16).
East Bay has just one tournament left on its schedule before competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship. Next week, the team travels to Turlock for the 41st annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, which begins Monday, Apr. 13.
