CHICO, Calif. -- Freshman
Jacob Call picked up his first collegiate victory on Sunday in leading the Cal State East Bay baseball team to a series-clinching 4-1 win over Chico State at Nettleton Stadium.Â
The red-hot Pioneers (17-26, 14-22 CCAA) have now won 10 of their last 13 games after taking three out of four from the Wildcats (18-25, 17-23 CCAA). Chico State started the day by celebrating a large continent of seniors prior to their final game, but it was East Bay celebrating in the end after winning their second straight series in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Pioneers got things started right away to stake Call to a lead before he ever took the mound.
Marcus Wise walked to lead off the game, moved up on a bunt by
Devin Higgins, and scored when
Ryan Kochan yanked a double down the left field line. After a passed ball,
Jason Fletcher made it 2-0 with an opposite field single.
Tyler Madrid doubled to lead off the second for Chico, and Jeff Ortega drove him in with a single to cut East Bay's lead in half.Â
However, the Wildcats managed no further rallies against Call, who was brilliant over the next fine innings. At one point, the right-hander set down 10 batters in the a row, and he needed less than 90 pitches to cruise through seven innings.Â
CSUEB added another run in the top of the fifth in support of Call, who entered the game with an 0-5 record for the season despite several strong outings. A walk and two bunts loaded the bases for East Bay with no outs, and then Kochan knocked in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly.Â
Rudy Navarro led off the top of the eighth with a double, and Fletcher followed with a single to give the Pioneers an insurance run and a 4-1 lead.
Justin Harr saw his first action of the series in relief of Call, who gave up one run on four hits with no walks in seven innings. Harr struck out a pair over two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.
The Pioneers out-hit Chico State seven to five for the game, led by Fletcher (2-for-4, two RBI) and Wise (2-for-3 with a walk).Â
Kochan drove in two and extended his hitting streak to eight games. The reigning CCAA Player of the Week batted .529 in the series to raise his season average to .360, fifth-highest in the conference.
East Bay is playing its best baseball of the season heading into the final series of 2015 next week against Cal State Stanislaus. The Pioneers host the opener at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 1. They also close out the season at home with a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, May 3, which will be preceded by the annual Senior Day ceremony.
